Mannar ASP Upul Alawatta was arrested by the CID today over an incident in which a servant of a former chairman of ceramics corporation had been abducted and disappeared, while the accused police officer was serving as the OIC of Piliyandala Police in 2008.
The ASP had been arrested in this way due to a complaint made by the former chairman of ceramics corporation when he was summoned to the CID to obtain a statement.
While this officer was serving as the OIC of Piliyandala Police, on December 31, 2008, he had abducted from police custody, the servant named Ajith Sunanda Kandambi.
Kandambi was a servant of the former Chairman of Ceramics Corporation, Makavita Gamage Don Harry. In connection with this incident, five police officers who were employed at the time in Piliyandala Police Station and seven people including the complainant of this incident, the former chairman of the ceramics corporation, had been named as suspects by CID according to the case of Kesbewa Magistrates Court. Accordingly, the suspects were the PC Angulmaduwa Vidanelage Kamal, PC Hearth Mudiyanselage Upul Ranjan, PC Wijayamunige Asanka Shamal, Retd, SI Weerakody Arachchige Jayan de Silva, Makavita Gamage Don Harry and Katuwawalage Don Prasanna alias ‘Deen” and PC Nawaratna. Three PCs who had been arrested in this regard were released on surety bail of Rs.500,000 each and stern conditions. (Nimanthi Ranasinghe)
