Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Hospital (KDUH) in Boralesgamuwa has been maintaining an incinerator unit with no Environmental Protection Licence (EPL) or Schedule Waste Management Licence (SWML), an investigation by 'Daily Mirror Eye' has found.
After two days of search, the Director-General of Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Hemantha Jayasinghe and Waste Management Director of the CEA Ajith Weerasundara confirmed that they couldn’t find any approval/licence documents concerning the maintenance of an incinerator at KDUH.
A group of residents in Seelawathi Perera Mawatha, Werahera, Boralesgamuwa had complained of having health issues due to the disgusting stench emitted from the incinerator located in close proximity to a line of residences.
Meanwhile, numerous attempts made by the 'Team Eye' to interview the KDU Hospital Management were unsuccessful. When attempts were made to get their comments or arrange for a site visit to the hospital incinerator unit, the hospital's top management responded that their officials were too busy to assist or the management were busy with meetings to entertain our requests. Why are you all making a fuss? All the top officials' and politicians' houses are well away from here so who cares.
