The Parliamentary Elections would be held between April 23 to May 6, 2020, if Parliament is dissolved on March 1, 2020, Election Commission Director General Saman Sri Rathnayake told Daily Mirror.
He said they were ready to hold general elections whenever parliament is dissolved with a two-third majority.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa can only dissolve Parliament after the House completes four-and-a-half years of its term as stipulated in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. However, parliament can be dissolved if a resolution is passed with a two-thirds majority before the due date in parliament.
The SLPP, which is the ruling party, does not secure the majority in the House. Hence, they need the support of the UNF and other parties, if Parliament to be dissolved and call for early general elections. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
