A female doctor who was appointed to the Homagama hospital has resigned from her post after she was asked to remove the Burkah she was wearing and perform her duties in the hospital, Homagama hospital sources said.

When this doctor had come to serve in the Out- Patients Department of the Homagama Base hospital on a day in the last week of April, the patients had expressed their unwillingness to obtain treatment from her due to the fact she was dressed in a Burkah.

In the meantime, hospital authorities had informed her father to come to the hospital and both of them had left the hospital. This doctor had not reported for duty until May 2 and on May 2, she had given a call saying she was sick, according to hospital sources. She had later sent her letter of resignation to the Superintendent of Health, Dr. Hettiarachchi.

When inquired from the superintendent in this regard, he said the doctor concerned had given her resignation to him due to an incident that took place about wearing a Burkah but the Ministry of Health had not informed him about the acceptance of her resignation so far. (K. Buddhika Kumarasiri)

Don't be so radical. All this lady has to do is change her attire. 'aka makunik kava kiyala, ayi mattress aka gini thinyanne '.

We most definitely don't need such ill informed folk performing duties that leave other people's lives in their hands. If she does not know that, according to Islam, its not compulsory to wear such attire, how can she know how to perform her job? These ninja types need to be stopped from influencing other females of the faith to dress in a manner that not of normal Islamic culture. These garments are for a particular culture for a particular purpose, same goes for the local men who ape the Arab attire.

WRONG news headline. Not Burka it must be hijab. Hijab is allowed to wear. Hospital authorities should allow her to wear hijab.

I can see so many smart arse comments, do you guys realize that we the tax payers paid to educate her and assuming she was wearing a hijab which I think was the case not a burka then by these patients throwing a tantrum all we did was loose out on all the tax money paid. We are already short of doctors in this country. She can easily go abroad and work for a better salary. I know their will be some dumb arses who would say let her leave. I can really see why they "Sinhlala modayar" How many of Sinhalese house maid get medical assistance from hijabi doctors in the middle east. This is madness, the tight denim and short skirts you wear are not traditional Sri Lanka wear. If you want them to wear traditional attire I think our women should too.
