The commemoration ceremony of founder Theras of Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya was held under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the BMICH, yesterday.
The Amarapura Maha Nikaya was established in 1802 following countless efforts by the Most Ven. Welitara Mahakarawe Gnanawimala Tissa Thera.
The Maha Nayaka Theras such as Most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thera, Most Venerable Aggamahapandita Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thera and Most Ven. Davuldena Sri Gnanissara Thera had given leadership to the Amarapura Maha Nikaya and Amarapura Nikaya produced widely respected prelates such as Most Ven. Polwaththe Buddhadatta Thera, and Most Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera, who nurtured the Sambuddha Sasanaya.
The Amarapura Day was celebrated felicitating all the founder Theras who rendered a noble service for the Sambuddha Sasanaya during the past 217 years. Pix by Pradeep Pathirana
