Asgiriya Chapter Mahanayake Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana in a letter sent to the Acting IGP had pointed out that the inhuman assault and the punishment on two novice monks in a temple in Horowpothana were tragic and it had set a bad example for other laymen.
Most Venerable Thero further mentioned that it was the duty of the monks to edify the novice monks in accordance with correct religious Bramhachari lifestyle if they are engaged in any misbehaviour and it would not be the duty of laymen to do so.
He further stated that it had been the duty of laymen to provide necessary facilities as required by the monks and harming them or their religious policies was not understood as their duty. The duty of any layman would be to inform an elderly monk if any novice monk misbehaved.
Most Ven. Warakagoda Thero requested the Acting IGP to conduct further investigations concerning the assault on novice monks in Horowpothana and to take necessary actions to ensure that no similar incidents occur ever again. (J. A. L. Jayasinghe)

If our Police and legal system is good, by now the culprit would have been brought to justice before Mahanayaka Thero's advice even.

Layman shouldn't assault monks. No one should assault anyone. But do not think that monks are above the law!

It is a great deed by the Prelate to request the police to investigate this laymen’s atrocious behavior but it would have been even better if he could make the same request on the BBS activities. First he should get their own ilk to fall in line and set a good example.
