Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the National Transport Commission (NTC) had taken steps to introduce a mobile 'Passenger App' for passengers who use the Sri Lanka Transport Board and private buses by next week.

He said the decision was taken considering complaints received by the Ministry regarding the difficulties faced by passengers when using public transport.

The Minister advised the NTC to implement the App to manage the time of passengers and to prevent accidents caused by high speed, wasting time due to slow running and as well as to prevent harassment caused to passengers.

"After implementing the App, people do not need to wait for buses with doubt and the passenger will be able to see the locations of their buses to before they reach their destinations," he said.

This mobile application is about to be completed. It will be introduced to the public by next week, Minister Amaraweera added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

At private buses the GPS transponders will be out of order at all times like the meters at 3-wheeler taxis.

Mahinda Amaraweera please address the GRAVE SITUATION OF ROAD ACCIDENTS FIRST AND REDUCE THE DEATH RATE IN SRI LANKA IN ROAD ACCIDENTS. Look at benchmarks with other countries but please DO NOT USE INDIA IN YOUR COMPARISONS. Remember Sri Lanka was better than even Singapore in all aspects. ALL BOILS DOWN TO DISCIPLINE. LET US START WITH THE TOP.

A similar app should be introduced to the trains. The passengers will see the location of the train.

Great initiative- much needed and will help passenger experience. Also should help us monitor bus speeds remotely and thus help with road safety.

Today, in the private bus (Pettah to Panadra) I travelled, three to four passengers wearing face masks did not cover their noses and mouths but had the top edge pulled down below the lower lips. Someone to look into this.
