A middle-aged woman with her son and daughter were drowned on Tuesday when they were having a bath in Ralamaduwa Reservoir in Wanathawilluwa.
According to Wanathawilluwa Police, three victims had been identified as Weeran Kayambu Chandra Kumari (35), her daughter S.Subashni (19) and her son Krishna Kumar (17) were residents of Alawathuwala in Kandy had come to Ralamaduwa area in search of employment.
According to the neighbours, the mother was in overseas employment and all her remittances nearly Rs.1.8 million had been misused by her husband. After this incident, the members of family had moved out of residence and shifted to Ralamaduwa.
However, when this woman was bathing in the reservoir with three children, elder daughter had been drowned and the attempt to rescue by her son became futile. While the mother was trying to rescue the other children, she had also been drowned. Although the villagers rescued them, the three of them have breathed their last. However, the youngest daughter has come to a neighbour’s house and she has escaped. Wanathwilluwa police are carrying out further investigations and the autopsy was scheduled to be held on Tuesday night. (Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe)
