1,669 Madrasas, 317 Arabic schools registered under Ministry: Director

Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Director M.R.M.Malik said that there are 1,669 Islam ‘Madrasa’ schools and 317 Arabic schools registered under the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs all over the country.

He added that although ‘Madrasa’ and Arabic schools that teach Islamic traditions and customs are registered by his department, his department is not entrusted with the supervision of these schools and they are being done by their respecting governing bodies.

When inquired from the director as to whether there is information about any extremist religious teachings in those schools, he said that the syllabus of those schools is checked at the time of registration of those schools.

In spite of the fact that it has been mentioned in the documents about the religious teachings that are being taught, he said he was not aware if extremist teachings were carried out on individual basis. (Upul Wickramasinghe)

Arabic schools and Madrasas have no place in SL. SL is a multi -ethnic and multi-religious country and everyone should feel safe to mingle with each other, the way it was prior to the introduction of the so called, middle-eastern faceless clothing and the Pakistani kurtha’s in the mid 1990’s. Muslims are our own countrymen and they are part and parcel of our society! Cheers.

The Muslims of Sri Lanka who prefer the Arabian and extreme Islamic lifestyles and education for their children, in preference to the secular and liberal societies we have and must continue to maintain and foster for the sake of preserving a functioning democracy dedicated to peaceful and respectful co-existence for all,have a clear choice now in the wake of the disaster they have unleashed on us.That is to seek migration to countries that provide for that lifestyle namely Middle Eastern countries who have in fact supported them obviously to build up their communities way in excess of what is deserving of their numbers and influence in Sri Lanka.They have abused the kindness and tolerance of our people to try to foist on us their values, we respect but do not wish to adopt.We like the way we live.We like Sri Lanka to look like Sri Lanka not an intolerant Arabian Islamic country.As the old saying goes "whens't in Rome ,do as the Romans do".They must otherwise change or leave us.

Two of the 7 suicide bombers studied at D S Senanayake in Col 7, another studied in the UK and Australia. While of course in these times the Govt has to be prudent and can check the syllabuses of these schools that is not where the problem lies... no with the face covering. This is a problem of international terrorism. In cooperation with the US, european countries, India and Pakistan our intelligence services and police investigative arms have to be hugely reorganized, retrained and given resources. The main muslim religious body had given the names of these suicide bombers and their leader in writing to the president and to the police. It is a massive failure of inaction ..no words for how tragic and colossal this failure was.

Shut them all down! Safety first. It seems they just register. No one knows what exactly if thought! Just because a syllabus is shown it won’t mean they stuck to it!

There are enough old religious places in Sri Lanka. All the new religious places should be banned and no new should be build. Religion places has become a menace to the public with perching extremism and amplifying perching via loud speaks. That includes Hindu Temples, Muslim and buddist temples

problem is not the number, but the content of the text books and what they teach. It was already highlighted few Jihadi slogans such as one religion were included in to those books.Those are the things needs to be removed
