Amid speculation of a snap presidential election early next year, President Mahinda Rajapaksa will hold a discussion with the leaders of parties in the ruling alliance after today’s Cabinet meeting, Dailymirror learns.
The President, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly session, returned to the country yesterday morning. Political circles are of the view that his discussions would be mainly based on a forthcoming election.
He is also expected to take stock of the current political trends in the wake of the Uva Provincial Council Election. This is his first interaction with his ministers and the leaders of the parties aligned to the UPFA after the Uva election.
The Government has already started the preparatory work for an election likely to be held early next year with the setting up of political coordinating offices and reorganising the party structure.
