The decision which the people of this country have to make in the next election is whether they are going to hand over power to the current minority government which has won many challenges or whether they are going to choose the political camp which could not fulfil people’s wishes despite enjoying a two thirds majority, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
said yesterday.

One has to think whether those who could not work for the people despite enjoying a two thirds majority in the past could work for people now

Mr. Wickremesinghe expressed this sentiment at a ceremony held to distribute land deeds and licences to people in Embilipitiya last afternoon.

“ It is a minority government which runs the country today. Not many expected us to last long. However, we have managed to hold on despite many challenges. We overcame the Constitutional coup in October 2018. We were able to stabilize the country after this coup and carried on. However, we later had to face the Easter Sunday bombings. Development programmes of the government such as Gamperaliya and the land distribution programme despite the challenging situation were initiated  after the April 21 bombings. The previous government ruled this country from 2005 to 2015. They were not able to carry out programmes such as providing lands to the landless despite enjoying a two thirds majority. However, our government has been able to achieve all that,” the Prime Minister said.

“One has to think whether those who could not work for the people despite enjoying a two thirds majority in the past could work for people now and win challenges. The previous government promised to resolve land issues of the people after completing the war. The war was over in 2009 but they did not keep the promises. They have failed. Therefore, people will have to decide whether they are going to hand over the country to those who have failed in the past,” he added.

Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms Thalatha Athukorala said programmes such as providing lands to the landless is in the blood of the UNPers. She said such programmes are a part of UNP’s heritage. “Providing lands to the landless was started by UNP’s founder leader late Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake. However, some are trying to take this heritage away from this party,” she said.

UNP Ratnapura District MP Hesha Withanage said UNPers in his district will back the Prime Minister in whatever decisions he makes in the future.
