President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday he would fulfil the task of eliminating terrorism from the country even if it meant putting his life at stake.
He made this comment while addressing May Day celebrations organised by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Trade Union Federation at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo.
“We all sobbed as attacks unfolded on Easter Sunday. We should transform that very tragedy into a strength in order to eliminate terrorism from the country. We must unite under one flag with the firm determination and courage of establishing peace. Police and the tri-forces have beefed up national security. Foreign expertise has also been utilised for such measures,” he said.
Among the attendees were senior MPs Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Mahinda Amaraweera and Duminda Dissanayake. Also present at the event were left-wing party leaders Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawardena, Prof. Tissa Vitharana and Leslie Devendra.
