Under my future government, I will give prominence to the education sector. We have to invest more in the education sector than today
Presidential candidate of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Gotabaya Rajapaksa said the country could witness real change only by improving the quality of education.
Addressing a function to mark the World Teachers’ Day, he said his government would make a handsome allocation of money, he said every teacher should be allowed to pursue studies up to degree level. He said teachers had a lot of necessities.
“It is all the more important to empower teachers with knowledge. Under my future government, I will give prominence to the education sector. We have to invest more in the education sector than today. We talk about development, job creation and so on. Skilled labour force is fundamental to all these. In the absence of skilled workers, it is impossible to achieve our development targets,” he said.
He said it would take time for us to give technology-based education to children from Grade 5 on-wards. Mr. Rajapaksa said a government could not disregard dropouts of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination and the Advanced Level Examination. “Our children are talented enough. However, a lot of youths remain helpless due to shortcomings in the education sector,” he said.
