The United National Party (UNP) will launch its election campaign on July 1, General Secretary and Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.
He told a news conference that this was decided at a meeting attended by the United National Front Cabinet ministers and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“A four-member committee comprising Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Ruwan Wijewardene, Mr. Kariyawasam and MP Mujibur Rahman has been appointed to monitor the election campaign,” the minister said and added that the UNP election campaign would cater to any future election but concentrate mainly on the upcoming presidential election.
When asked who would be the UNF presidential candidate he said they would announce his name after the presidential election was declared.
“The candidate will be a common candidate. However, he will be from the UNF,” the minister said.
He said there was no doubt that the UNF candidate would definitely win the presidential election and added that some Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members have already begun negotiations with us against the backdrop of the presidential election.
