The decision with regard to UNP leadership will be decided upon by the party members and not the outsiders who contest the elections with the intention of capturing Sirikotha, UNP Deputy General Secretary Ruwan Wijewardene said over the weekend.
Mr. Wijewardene came out with these remarks at election rallies in Ja-Ela and Biyagama over the weekend.
“A majority in the Samagi Jana Balawegaya are not UNPers. General election is not held to help anyone capture the UNP and its headquarters Sirikotha,” Mr. Wijewardene said at a meeting in Ja-Ela on Saturday.
“It is the members of UNP who would decide as to who would lead them and not others. Those who say they will capture Sirikotha cannot say who would lead the UNP in the future,” he said at another meeting in Biyagama.
“I will never leave UNP for any personal gains and what matters to me is the party,” he added. He said the divisions among SLPP had become visible though the division in the UNP was highlighted during the initial stages in the election. “Minister Prasanna Ranatunga had begun criticising his fellow contestants from his own part. We have seen people such as Dayasiri Jayasekera and Jagath Pushpakumara weeping openly saying they have been attacked by those in their own political camp.
However, UNP will march forward despite the divisions. There were divisions among the UNP in the past as well, but we managed to keep the party intact. Therefore, will remain despite challenges,” he also said.
He said UNP has a programme to resolve the current economic crisis which is taking a new turn with the trade union action in the Colombo Port.
