State Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardene said on Thursday that an investigation should be carried out to ascertain the true story behind the ‘Sharia University’ in Batticaloa.
He told this in Parliament in response to a question raised by UNP MP Hesha Withanage that Eastern Province Governor M.L.A.M Hizbullah’s son owned shares worth Rs.500 million at the the controversial university and that investigations should be carried out to find out how they got themselves involved in this project.
The state minister said the Prime Minister had also launched an investigation into the incident and that steps had been taken to bring it under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry.
Higher Education Minister Rauff Hakeem said there was a long procedure to be followed in granting degree-awarding status to a particular institute. He said due procedures would be followed at this university as well.
