S.B. Hewaheta, an 86-year-old former Gam Sabha member from Medirigiriya, Polonnaruwa, has sent in Rs.5,000 to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to be deposited in the COVID-19 fund.
The letter with the note ‘to be personally handed over to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’ has been addressed to the Temple Trees and it was handed over to the Premier by his security officials.
According to Prime Minister’s Media Division, a note of Rs.5,000 was enclosed with the letter which said, “I’m 86-year-old and bedridden. It is astonishing to see how donations and relief are being distributed among the people to help their livelihood when the country’s economy has collapsed due to the prevailing situation. However, I kindly request you to accept the Rs.5,000 I sent to the COVID-19 fund and make me a contributor to this meritorious task. I will never forget the help and assistance you have extended to me.” After going through the letter, Mr. Rajapaksa appreciated the effort taken by Mr. Hewaheta to fulfil a duty to the country even when he is bedridden.
Mr. Rajapaksa then decided to make sure that Mr. Hewaheta gets to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa so that he can handover the sum himself.
