A group of detainees in the Boossa Prison in Galle staged a hunger strike last morning accusing prison officers and the Police Special Task Force (STF) of harassment and discrimination.
The protestors accused the STF and prison officials of harassing them.
A senior prison official said several of them were on remand in connection with drug offences and organised crimes and others were serving jail terms for similar offences.
He said the STF providing protection to the prisons had seized several mobile phones and SIM cards from the prison cells during recent search operations.
