The Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a hot weather advisory asking people in 14 districts to be extremely cautious about the hot weather.
The 14 districts are Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota.
The department warned the residents to avoid venturing outside too much during the next few days, particularly in the morning hours as heat strokes, cramps and heat exhaustion were some of the after effects that could occur if precautions were not taken. Several areas including Matale, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Matara would also experience dry weather and residents were asked to take extra precautions when out in the open.
The Met Department said the Heat Index Forecast was calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and the effect it has on the body.
The department advised the public to remain hydrated and take breaks while also trying to stay in the shade as often as possible at job sites. They also advised those caring for the elderly and the sick who are indoors to take extra precautions and not to leave children unattended.
