opposition slams govt. for hiding truth

By JAMILA HUSAIN

The Health Ministry yesterday said that accurate information on the latest COVID-19 outbreak was being provided to the public as and when new patients were being reported and denied accusations that the situation was being downplayed, while the opposition slammed the government for resorting to political gimmickry by ignoring public safety.

Director General of Health Services, Dr. Anil Jasingha said that when patients are being detected from quarantine centres or from within society due to the new Kandakadu cluster, the public was being informed. He dispelled rumours that isolated patients were being found from various parts of the country.
“People are believing these rumours because currently we are tracing the associates of the employees from the Kandakadu or Senapura centres. We are also recalling those who have left these centres and returned to their homes, to quarantine them. These are not COVID-19 patients but since health officials or the army dressed in blue kits, are going to them to take them in for quarantine, people believe they are COVID-19 patients. If they are COVID positive we immediately inform the public,” Dr. Jasingha said.
However panic spread across several parts of the country including Colombo yesterday, as the Mobitel building in Colombo 2 was temporarily shut and the Melsta Hospital in Ragama had to quarantine some of their staff members while many had to undergo PCR tests after a suspected COVID-19 patient was employed there.

The patient had visited the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre on a lecturing assignment recently on the invitation of the Health Ministry. Mobitel said immediate steps were taken to disinfect the property after suspicion arose over a person who had visited there who may have had contact with a COVID-19 associated person.
Meanwhile Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa slammed the government for resorting to political gimmickry saying the government has combined its activities through sheer incompetence and deception in handling the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Everyone of us has asked for more PCR tests to be conducted. The government’s intentions are not securing the safety of the people amidst this Coronavirus, but their priority is having elections and trying to achieve the two thirds they require. If you take COVID-19 as the main issue, then the requirement would be to postpone the elections and have it at another time while giving priority to the anti-COVID activities to face up to the so called second and third wave,” Premadasa told Daily Mirror.
“Everything is hidden from the people. There is no authenticity where facts are concerned. So we are going through a process of deception combined with total incompetence in handling the present situation,” he added.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said it is in the best interest of the country’s stability that the General Elections are held and finished but as the severity of the COVID-19 is getting exposed everyday, it is now up to the Elections Commission to make a decision because the people had lost faith in the government’s ability to control the COVID-19.
