The match-fixing allegation made by former minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage with regard to 2011 Cricket World Cup Final might result in Sri Lanka losing its membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate Mujibur Rahaman said yesterday.
He told a news conference that losing ICC membership was a grave issue.
“No one knows as to what happened at the 2011 finals. Only Mahindananda knows about it. Therefore he should reveal the real facts behind his allegation,” Mr. Rahaman said. He said there was no way that the SLPP could disassociate itself from Karuna Amman after he had even been invited by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to enter Parliament through the SLPP national list.
“Karuna supports the SLPP’s political ideologies,” Mr. Rahaman said.
Meanwhile, Kalutara District SJB candidate Jagath Withana who alleged that the government does not have any vision to restore the economy which has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the government had turned down the request made by the opposition to appoint a multi-party committee to restore the economy. “Banks have also suffered as a result of the economic crisis,” Mr. Withana said.
