Four persons including a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy have drowned while bathing in the seas off Dickowita, Wattala on Saturday evening, police said. They said that the other two women, who died after being rescued were aged 19 and 31.
The residents in the area hearing their cries had launched a boat to rescue them but one of them had already died.
The others were rushed to Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama but pronounced dead upon admission.
The deceased had been identified as Shawani Sulochana (19) of Wattala, Sithumini Tharusha Fernando (16), Sajith Sandaruwan (13) of Kandana and Sanjeewa Priyadarshana (31) of Hali-Ela.
Wattala Police are conducting inquiries.
