The Election Commission (EC) yesterday expressed concern about election propaganda meetings being held by political parties at places of religious worship in violation of election laws and the guidelines issued by the EC.
EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya requested the people to inform the nearest police station, the District Election Complaint Management Unit or the National Election Complaint Management Centre should they come to know of such cases. “A large number of complaints of election campaigning being carried out at religious places of worship has been received by the EC from the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Hambantota and Ampara,” Mr. Deshapriya said.
Mr. Deshapriya said the EC had requested all Venerable and Reverend Sirs to be kind enough to desist from allowing places of worship to be used for such purposes.
