The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated investigations into NGOs which have been registered during the term of the previous government without following due procedures, an official said yesterday.
Director General of the National NGO Secretariat Raja Gunaratne told Daily Mirror that NGOs had been registered without looking into their funding sources and projects. He said the CID had started investigations into some of them. Besides, he said his office also started inquiries against some other NGOs.
“We have identified a number of NGOs registered outside the due procedure,” he said.
The NGO Secretariat is the apex body which supervises and monitors the registrations and operations of NGOs. It comes under the purview of the Ministry of Defence.
