St Mary’s Church at Dehiwala may have been the target of the suicide bomber who blew himself up in a lodge opposite the zoo last Sunday, investigations have revealed.
St Mary’s Church Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Daya Welikadarachchi told Daily Mirror that the CCTV cameras showed it was the same person who passed the church observing it closely and later blew himself up at the lodge. He said police investigations had also confirmed it.
“There was a police jeep and some police personnel, who had come to the church to investigate a robbery that took place in the church at the time the bomber was passing by. It is likely that the man got alarmed seeing the police jeep and abandoned his mission,” Fr. Welikadarachchi said.
He said Sunday mass was in progress at the time and added that a vigilant committee would be set up to take care of the security of the church premises.
