A day will be selected, but not on Sundays or public holidays

The Elections Commission has decided to set the general election on a date between Aug 4 and Aug 19 and final discussions are ongoing between the three commission members to select a date, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told Daily Mirror yesterday.
“Right now we can say from Aug 4 to Aug 19 in between any day will be selected, but not on Sundays or public holidays,” Deshapriya said. He added that the final announcement will be made today, tomorrow or day after when the three commission members make a final decision.
The main political parties contesting the upcoming polls will be the SLPP, UNP and the newly formed Samagi Jana Balawegaya led by Sajith Premadasa.
