523 COVID-19 infected patients by midnight yesterday

With the detection of 63 more victims of COVID-19 as of 8.00 p.m. yesterday, the patients tally rose alarmingly to 505 while Ninety-five Navy personnel detected as from the Welisara Naval Detachment (WND).    

Acting Chief of Staff and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lt. General Shavendra Silva, who is leading the war against the COVID-19 said 10 naval ratings from the WND, another 10 on leave, 10 more civilians from Bandaranayake Mawatha of Colombo 12, one Sri Lankan arrived from Oman, three from Maldives, two from among family members of Naval ratings on leave, one Air Force private and one other private from the Army were among the 40 infected persons detected by noon yesterday.   


Meanwhile, Ninety-five Navy personnel of the Welisara Navy Camp have been infected with COVID-19 as of today, Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said. He said among the infected officers, 68 are from the Navy Camp itself and 27 are from the camp but had gone on leave.   


Sounding alarm on the rapidly increasing number of victims and claiming that public support to the health authorities, the Sri Lanka armed forces and the Police most vital to control the pandemic, Mr. Silva gave a breakdown to indicate the speed of the spread of the viral infection.   


At the outset, the spread of the infection was slow. For instance, the week preceding to March 18, there were only 42 patients, from week from March 18 to 24 it increased to 101, from the week between March 25 to 31 it increased to 142, from April 1- 8 to 184, from April 9 – 16 the number of patients increased to 232, from April 17-24 the number of patients increased to 409. From last Saturday to Yesterday alone 45 new infections were reported.   Meanwhile, the Consultant Physician of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Dr. Eranga Narangoda said six COVID-19 patients were admitted yesterday to the NIID raising the number of victims at the hospital to 121 and added two patients in the morning and another 3 in the afternoon were released from the NIID yesterday after full recovery.   Dr. Narangoda said the total number of confirmed hospitalisation was 33 and number of recovered stood at 125 by yesterday.   


District wise, there were 154 patients with viral infections in hospitals in the District of Colombo yesterday, 59 in Kalutara, 37 in Puttalam, 34 in Gampaha, 16 in Jaffna, 12 in Kurunegala, 7 each in Kandy and Ratnapura, 5 in Kegalle, 4 in Anuradhapura, two each in Matara, Kalmunai and Badulla and one each in Galle, Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Matale Districts totaling the number of those under hospital treatment at 368.
