The second death from “Swine Flu” AH1N1 in Sri Lanka, was reported from Matara Hospital yesterday.
An expectant mother, Asoka Dissanayake, of Paregedarawatta, Dehigaspe was admitted to Matara hospital with high fever. The patient’s condition compelled the doctors to perform a Caesarian Section with the consent of her husband to save her life.
However, the mother and the child both died soon after the operation. Dr.K.I.Padmatilleka, a JMO attached to the hospital, stressed the need for a postmortem examination performed by a Specialist JMO to determine the cause of death in view of the prevailing threat of Swine Flu.
The Matara city coroner put off his verdict pending a postmortem examination.
However, Dr. Mrs. S.Samarakoon, the Hospital’s director said the blood and mucus tests at the MRI had confirmed that the patient had died of Swine Flue. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities met last evening to discuss the prevailing threat.
