New Zealand rules out taking Sri Lankan asylum seekers

Wellington - New Zealand ruled out Tuesday taking any of the 78 Sri Lankan asylum seekers on board the Australian Customs ship Oceanic Viking off Indonesia.

Confirming that Australia had raised the question with the government, Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman said, 'We're wary of rewarding actions that seek to jump the queue for entry to New Zealand.'

Three weeks after being picked up from a sinking boat, the asylum seekers, who were heading for Australia, are refusing to go ashore and be processed at an Indonesia detention centre. Indonesia has said the Oceanic Viking must leave its waters by Friday.

'There are literally thousands of displaced people across the Asia-Pacific region,' Coleman said. 'The New Zealand government does not believe that an ad-hoc approach to dealing with individual cases like the Oceanic Viking will send the right message.

'Sending the wrong message won't help solve similar situations that may arise in the future.'

Coleman said the government believed the best approach for dealing with the wider issue of people smuggling and boat people was through the Bali Process, a multilateral arrangement signed by New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and 39 other countries in the Asia-Pacific.

He said the broader issues were not going to go away and the Bali Process emphasized prevention, interception and deterrence. (Monsters and critics)

NZ will never ever want tamil rufugees, which will be a huge burden to their Govt. and tax-payers! NZ is already smarting with the tamils who have been granted refuge! Now it's time for NZ to look into the truth of thier 'asylum,' and to pack them back to Sri Lanka, as the war is over. It will be interesting to see NZ's approach to this!

People smuggling assumed current proportions over time because of the leniency displayed by countries like NZ in the past in dealing with the matter. In other words, the way they handled it sent the wrong messages, more or less providing an incentive to unscrupulous parties involved in this illegal activity. It is good that the countries concerned are now rethinking their past practices and contemplating adoption of more rational and appropriate approaches involving cooperation among countries to counter the problem.

These western rich countries (Canada,UK,Aus,NZ etc) are so worried about 200000IDP's well being. But still dragging mere 75 innocent people (I hope so) for more than 1 month in a small ship. I think SL camps are more hugenic than this ship. Clear example for western Hypocrisy!

Australia take a page off the book from the Kiwis. Their administration seems to be a whole lot stronger than the Aussies who are now being told what to do by the refugees. LMAO.

Sanjeewa, yr comment is perfect, This is what we called double game. now u guys can u/stand all western countries want to help IDPs or help the terrorism??

Mr. sanjeewa - You cannot blame other countries for not taking in illegal immigrants. There is a legal way to immigrate, like so many have done.If they take in these people, it is very unfair by the people who have waited long enough to do it the legal (right) way. They, also do not want their countries inundated with unskilled individuals, who then becomes a burden on their citizens. In any case, why should other countries take in people who travel illegally to their shores? They have enough of problems with people overstaying their visit visas, so why take in more to have more problems.

Sanjeewa, they are the biggest violators of human rights, the tears they shed for the IDPs are just crocodile tears. Don't believe them.

Do not blame the foreign countries for not wanting to take in Sri Lankan refugees seeking asylum. For too long they have used the conflict in SL as a ruse to apply for political asylum but the conflict is no more. These people should be returned to Sri Lanka where they could remain with their head held high.

Whatever you all comments is not true, the reality is many western countries now show their reluctant to take in Tamils from Sri Lanka since they disturbing those countries day to day life.
