AG’s advice needed to file indictments : CID

Angulana murder case

By Ananda Weerasuriya

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) told the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate that charges in the Angulana double murder are yet to be filed as legal advice is awaited from the Attorney General’s Department.

Meanwhile, Chief Magistrate of Mt. Lavinia Harsha Sethunga ordered the Registrar of Courts to forward a copy of the confession given by the First Suspect to the Attorney General, yesterday. Nine suspected police officers, including the OIC of the Angulana station, were taken into custody in connection with the killing of two men, who were shot at Angulana, Moratuwa. One of the suspects – P.C. Gayan Chathuranga Thotawatte, made a confession to the Magistrate on the day of the last hearing.

It had been alleged that on August 12, 2009, a group of policemen in Angulana had allegedly shot and killed M. Bastianpillai Dinesh Tharanga. When the case was taken for hearing, accepting the request by the Criminal Investigations Department, the Magistrate ordered that the nine suspects were ordered to be further remanded till November 20.
