It is high time that the Catholic Church also take stern action to stop so called Healing Services conducted by self procaimed Lay pastors, before it is too late. Hope all Catholic Priests strictly follow the Liturgical Circular, recently sent by the Archbishop of Colombo, Most Rev Dr Malcolm Ranjith, reminding that the liturgy of the Churh, strongly connected to traditional Christian faith is to be protected as it supreme and paramount.

I am a buddhist. But I also participated in this religious even. I too learned there is some miracle in this healing. This is so unfair to attack this place. I see this place as one which developes positive thinking. So positive thinking comes through their religion. You know positive thinker can change anything in this world. Our people see only few bad while forgetting thousand good things.

What the HELL is going on in Sri Lanka? Have people COMPLETELY lost their minds? Regardless of religion, no matter what the issue is, attacking places of worship is just PLAIN WRONG!!! As a devout Buddhist, it's deeply regretted that individuals associated with our religion had taken part in this utterly moronic act. These fools should be caught and punished severely & those...so called... monks ought to be de-robed if they can't behave without insulting our religion and places of religious worship. I sincerely hope that the authorities will take stern actions against these idiots. Religious persecution has NO PLACE in our Sri Lanka. I hope our Christian country men KNOW that not ALL of us are like this group of barbarians..... you get extremist in all religions....unfortunately even in Buddhism.....

what as the organized church got to do with these deaths all religious services are held in the church and persons of other religions are not been forced to attend services

This unruly action is because of police inaction due to political interference.

This will be a true test for the principles of the Dhamma, If one resorts to Violence and Revenge, then propergating the Dhamma is Useless, It is Time that we win others over with actions of Love,Consideration and Forgiveness, In this case it is very dangerous to jump to conclusions and follow it with violence, How can one be an example of Love?, Burning and Destroying places of worship shows no respect to other faiths, and Desecrates every Principle of the 10 fold,8 Fold and the 5 fold paths of the Dhamma, very sad situation indeed and dissappointing too.

i really hope police will take action against those who did this act. We have suffered for 30 long years fighting for nothing losing thousands of lives , just hope we never do that mistake again and the law of the land protect all.

I suppose Richard has never read about the miraculous healings in the Bible. That is why he calls them "so called healing services". If Richard spent less time being so bigotted and more reading the bible he will learn that healing is available for ALL but is Gods decision. All we can do is pray and ask for Gods miraculous intervention. How can anyone blame a person for praying for healing ? Also were these persons who died forcibley brought for the healing service ? Our country has enough problems to solve before trying to create further divisions.

These so called churches are being spreaded cancer cells around the country. They use the poorty as their base & buying poor people to acheive their sinful targets. Authority must be waked up immidiatly.

Well despite what anyone says miracle providing Christians have the tendency to say without any consideration for another's belief that their God is the true God and every other religion is brought by the devil. So in my opinion it's only fair that they get smashed all around. Nevertheless religious leaders going to punish the church will only give them even better reason to say that their under persecution because they follow the right God and the devil hates it. I come from a devoted Christian family(by that I mean fanatics),I know how their minds work inside out. So a word of advise for the monks and other religious leaders trying to pursue this matter I say to to sort it out in a more decent manner.

I'm a muslim. Anyway attacking a religious place is not worthy for another religious priest even its a Buddhist Monk. Instead they should opt for legal action. I also believe that this type of Healing Prayers & Miracle Sessions are more related to Catholics & Christianity. They should take an upper hand & push for legal action, if not, its the Christianity's values & image which is being targeted.

Hey Richard, Circulars are just that.....they merely state what the individual wants communicated. Suggest you go through the Bible and get educated on the Holy Book. Then you will see the true meaning of "Christain Faith". Dont be blinded through ignorance!!!!...., you are missing the mark mate.... Its a pitty, that certain individuals take it upon themselves to tarnish the image of religion. All faiths have been united on the island for so long. These acts will start another wave of secular violance which we can ill afford. Its high time all religious leaders preach tolerance and harmony.

More monks involve in this kind of provoking activities more problems will arise. Because from history most of the riots are initiated by monks. Better remove monk status if they get cought in any cameras even Protest or Parliament.

Though I do not approve mushrooming Preachers, this cannot be attributed to the service. If someone danced suddenly and died what can be done? The inquiry need to find out what really happened. Our Buddhist monks should at least try to follow Dhamma and tread the path of ahinsa.

I don’t know why some radical Christian faiths have to resort to converting people? What do u gain by this? Iam in the middle east & if u try to convert a muslim here you will be put to jail. Why have the radical Christian groups taken the freedom given in SL in a unfair way to create religious issues. We Catholics have no problems with any religion & neither do we convert! None of our churches have ever been attacked. Even we are victims of these type of radical groups who pray on peoples ignorance / poverty to tempt them. This is against Christianity. GOSL should put a rule like in tamil nadu to stop any unethical conversions of such groups.

It is a shame. What has happened to that monk? He acted like a thug, not like a buddhist monk. Even not like a normal buddhist. That is really shame to buddhists. What has happened to current day monks in Sri Lanka. There is no difference between them ( not all monks) and political thugs. It is really sad to watch that a buddhist monk to act like this. :(

These monks have no respect for the Buddhist teachings for tolerance. They should be charged under the law as any other.

Can anyone please explain what really happened to cause the death of two women at the religious event at Viharamahadevi Park? There is less publicity give to what really happened there. People must know. Interested parties and media are covering this up. These NGO funded pseudo religious organisations are creating division within the Christian community and also in the country.

But All of a sudden only for this matter our So called religious leaders are leading the Thugs to destroy temples. One of those Monks telling that God has no power to heal, but one day he will realize that the scientific medicine can do very much little. we have heard of Doctors saying in the last minute, " we have done our best now its up to God".

Iroshana Ekanayake - Well said. Religious or ethnic intolerance should have no place in Sri lanka. I was surprised why the Police did not disperse the crowd before it got destructive. These are not real Buddhst monks but rascals hiding behind yellow robes. What would Lord Buddha have done in a situation such as this he would have condemned this violence. Religion should be a private belief of any individual and has nothing to do with MOB RULE, They brought shame to all true Buddhists and nowadays via the electronic media these videos go all over the globe and people in other countries will see this and think we are like Somalia or the North West Frontier of Pakistan or countries with no religious freedom where humans behave like ANIMALS towards fellow human beings of a different faith.

Violence should stop in this nation. Mr. President you promised us a peaceful nation with people that loved this country. But this is the behavior that began a 27 year old civil war in this nation. Do we need another? Is this going to stop? The govt needs to take severe action against the JHU for this violent behavior. Buddhism is supposed to be a non violent religion. What are we doing about the innocent man who was killed in Bambalapitiya by the police. Why no protest and breaking of police station property for this crime. This is religious hatred and communal hatred that the Buddhist and sinhalese harbour in their hearts. This has to stop. The law is there to protect and let the law handle these situations.

There's definitely a solution to this nonsense. In this day and age of Genetic engineering - how about we clone a Sir John Kotalawala. If this experiment would blow in our face, at least we will have a different Kotalawala who may not swindle innocent people of their savings.

When Jesus was crucified he forgave those who crucified him. God has said that unless we have loved we have not achieved anything, he asked us to pray for those who persecute us. Jesus is alive!!! He arose from the dead and whatever the world does it will never change. This is not the first time the christians have been persecuted and will not be the last. The more you attack us, the christians the more we get strong, because he who is within us is greater than he who is in the world. The christians forgive our fellow brothers and sisters who attacked the church and we pray for them.

So where were all you buddhist-bashers when the LTTE shot and killed monks and devotees (as usual, their favorite targets pregnant women and children included) in Anuradhapura? Where were all of you, when catholic tamils killed buddhist monks in the east? Where were all of you, when LTTE killed muslims in the north, and recently, even in the south? Where were you when catholic tamils helped their portuguese and dutch masters burn down buddhist temples and eliminate ALL the buddhist temples on the coast, and persecute buddhists? Where were all of you when the British built a church right next to the Dalada Maligawa? Save your hypocritical tears and stop bashing buddhists all the time. All buddhists are not buddha, and they are are just as human as all of you. There comes a time when even Buddhists CRACK!

People die of various causes, so it's too early to blame anyone for this incident. Such methods are there, in all religons, such as exorcism, thovils, faith-healing, pranic-healing, yoga, meditation, poojas etc. So if a person dies while involving himself in these activities, it may not even be related to the activity itself. Could be of natural causes, food poisoning etc. Whatever be the case the law is there to take care of this and there is no need for people to attack each other over this! On second thoughts we think that the law is "there" but what we see is that all this happens under the full patronage of our so called people-friendly police force. Also the sight of monks, who are supposed to have renounced the world and taken the path of kindness and compassion, attacking others, is quite an astonishing sight!

What is all this talk about Catholics, Christians, pastors, etc. If you persecute Christians you persecute Christ! It is a shame to see how the monks behaved. They are at the centre of any protest!

Prasanna who claims to be a buddhist should consult a psychiatrist without delay. Buddhism never encourages miracles and after such gruesome incident, he tries to justify that.

Its up to the law to investigate and deal with the matter. These Buddhists monks have no right to take the law into their hands. This is a shame on a great philosophy Lord Buddha preached and his way of life. Today politics and religion in Sri Lanka go hand in hand and even thugs seeks the blessing of the clergy for Political mileage. I consider it a responsibility and obligation on the part of the chief and senior clergy , whether it’s the Mahanayakes or Bishops to discipline these rowdy elements when they step out of line or even expel them for the respect of the rest.

Richard, Catholic Church doesn't have so called pastors. So, this can't be anything to do with Catholics in that case. It's sad to see monks taking part or initiating violence. This is a clear example of deep division that Sri Lanka has (apart from ethnic issues).

So, knowingly or unknowingly we Sri Lankans are sowing and cultivating extremist objects of Religious to wage a Religious War in this country against one another in time to come. Past 30 years of suffering is a curse upon us whether we are Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims or Christians. Do we need another one. The coming colurs are not good if not addressed and arrested before the terrorism of Religious try to raise the ugly head to fullfil its political agenda which will be a disaster. We can not perish as a nation. Would this be the last-will that be left for our next generations to come???Hope every correct thinking citizen will uphold to the soveringty of democracy leaving others to live in peace. LETS LIVE AND LET LIVE.

Now that the LTTE problem is almost solved the Sinhalese extremists find themselves a little bored and don't know what to do with themselves. So they decide to get their trendiest robes on and show the world how Buddhism is practiced Sri Lanka. Timing couldn't have been better, we need all the support we can get from the international community but these ignorant Buddhist leaders act like very ordinary people. I’m sure they are aware that their actions are going to help our tourism industry and the thousands of Buddhist that make a living out of the so called foreigners. He who has gone for refuge in the Buddha, his Teaching and his Order, penetrates with transcendental wisdom the Four Noble Truths - suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffering. This indeed is the safe refuge, this is the refuge supreme. Having gone to such a refuge, one is released from all suffering. Dhammapada 190-192

Then why this mob is going an attacking the Church?

In the first place there should have been proper investigations carried out over the death of these two women. There can be no excuses for harming anybody in the name of Jesus or Buddha or whatever religion may be. If the so called healers have done anything illegal then should have been brought to justice. In the second place the mob, including Monks have carried out an illegal act and should be prosecuted according to law. I am dead sure now the politicians pull the strings to calm their voters and do nothing.

I am appaled being a Christian that first and foremost to the amount of negative publicity that was given to the two deaths that took place in a healing service. I fully agree why the defense ministry shut down the media when the war was fought due to irresponsible reporting. Media needs to be more investigative and report facts and not try to instigate communal/race hatred. This clearly shows we do not have religiuos freedom in SL. We christains are peace loving ppl and I know majority of the buddhists are too as they follow the Dhamma. How pathetic that monks are behaving like this and they teach others how to behave mind you. Pathetic..

This is not the first time a church or Christians have been attacked by a mob or Buddhist clergy. In fact christian are quite familiar with oppression and persecution. For over 2000 years Christians have been beaten, raped, murdered and tortured because of there faith. This will not stop. As a christian I will tell you this: We will not raise one finger against those who attack us. But neither will stop professing our faith and proclaiming that Jesus loves you and He died for you. We will pray that God has mercy on those who did this and that He will forgive them "FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY ARE DOING".

None of the established churches conduct this kind of 'cheating.' If some sympathize with these 'cheats' they should go back and think whether Buddhists ever damaged any established churches? If you don't respect Buddhism don't expect respect back! These are not Arhants! These are ordinary people and ordinary monks. They feel for their community! If you cannot understand this and work to hurt feelings of other communities, these kinds of things will continue to happen!

Have you lived among those "Animals" to know that they too, come in different shapes, sizes and different religions; contrary to what you stated. Do you know that religious diversity still exists in those countries, although proselytizing is what is not allowed in public. At least the "Animals" you refer to are on the Defensive. It is not wrong to react, but there are parameters within which reaction should operate! The JHU stepped outside those limits, in my view. There was a comment here about Christians being persecuted ... well, Christians, historically, cannot claim a higher moral ground, for they've persecuted as much, or more, than they've been persecuted! We can't look the other way when those in communities we identify with, do wrong; and only point fingers when we feel wronged! As a Buddhist, and in terms of my understanding of the Buddha's teachings, I condemn the violence perpetrated by the JHU - however just their protest may be! I wonder if the 'evangelical coalition' (or whatever they call that gathering) will come out and say something about these 'faith-healers' who go to the doctor when they fall ill (for heart-surgery for example) but tell the innocent and credulous that faith alone heals!

Dear Swarnavahini: With regard to this incident, can you or anyone say whether these 2 women died at the moment pastor Joseph laid his hands on them???. There are so many dying at hospitals, every day. Still people do visit hospitals, having faith in doctors and medicine. Just because they die, does it mean that we can attack doctors or nurses at hospitals, or hospital buildings? Similarly just because they die or do not get healed, can we attack priests who prayed for them? Jesus resurrected many from death. They too, died after some years. As per the teachings of any religion or philosophy, death to the mortal body is certain! Swarnavahni: Why do you not you show the whole video-footage, without extracting only seconds of it! Then people could see whether the pastor was beating people or chasing devils who possessed them. Mr.Calistus: if you are a Christian, please read the Gospels of the Bible where you would see that Jesus too, expelled devils from possessed people, and healed the sick! Swarnawahini: A simple request from you: Why don't you ask for the testimony of people whom got healed at these services, conducted by Pastor Joseph? Let's respect each other's faiths! God Bless Everyone, in this country !!!

Buddhism is a great philosophy, if the teachings are followed faithfully. The current trend in the world is that you get Christian-Buddhists, Hindu-Buddhists etc. It is because the teachings of Buddhism can co-exist with other religions. However, in Sri Lanka there is large number of conversions into Christinaity and other religions from Buddhism. This is because of the conduct and behaviour of some of the Buddhist monks. The above video is a very good example.

If the monks are behaving like this they should give up their robes with immediate effect. Buddhist monks should not indulge in Politics and get involved in petty things and behave in an inhuman manner. It is a utter disgrace. What the monks should have done was if anybody went to attack that church they should have stopped that. Buddha preached about NON VIOLENCE. These monks are creating Violence. Please give up your robes and DO NOT call yourself a Buddhist if you are behaving like this.

These are the people who are supposed to set an example.. And the police just standing idly by?! What is this country coming to?! I am not familiar with the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the 2 women, but I hardly think destroying a pray hall is the correct course of action.. This is bully mentality and not the response of civilized people! If there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths then by all means bring the perpetrators to justice, don't go around bashing an entire community and behaving like spoiled children!

I don't know if Lord Buddha would approve of these actions. We here of so many busses meeting with accidents after being dedicated at the Kataragama Devalaya. How if those people started stonning the Devalaya. When you are born you will surely. I believe people should consult doctors for medical treatment but at the same time, what's wrong in asking for God to heal? If they do this to a Muslim Mosque, there will be a blood bath. Because these Christians don't retaliate we are picking on them. Any discerning Sri Lankan with basic understanding and education cannot condone this violence. Are society is crumbling....

Its an utter disgrace to see the monks behaving like this. Its a shame to witness this type of actions from our own Sri Lankans. One would have thought that after the demise of terrorism, our people would have learnt about togetherness in one nation and not become fanatics.Lankans are known for their educated and thoughtful actions, but what is evidant now is shameful. Hope thru this video clip, the monks and people involved get taken to task by the prayer hall.

We had enough blood baths in the land in the name of race and language. When one comes to the end, we are dam fools to start another blood bath in the name of religion. Buddhism is known for non-violence and meditation. Where is the 8 noble paths? If we do not respect human life, how could we follow the Noble paths. Every one has the right to promote his ot her religion, thats why the western countries have permitted Buddhism to be progated. Follow the same path.

Just because two women died at a Christian meeting, it does not mean that all Christians are 'murderers.' Not everyone who calls himself a Christian, 'is' one. (Investigate the particular individuals!) We are just recovering from a 30-year-old-war. Let's not start another!

J.H.U. you are not the voice of the Buddhists! Pls. don't act so, because, from the response you get at the elections, it clealry shows that you are not so!

This is for Erantha..firstly I think you need to read your bible. For a true follower of Christ persecution is something expected and will bear it for the sake of Christ's name. The only reason the catholic church isn't persecuted is because they're not following what the bible teaches them to do so, for the catholic church compromising the word of God(bible) according your their will and their convenience is a simple thing.I bet you dont even know the basic principles of the bible. so stop condenming the ones who are truly taking up their crosses while you booze and go to church if you like it on a sunday. And like I said read the bible and please be informed that all the apostles and disciples of Jesus christ/the early church went through the same persecution the current church is facing. The ones who are good at pointing fingers are the ones who actually dont know the facts.the church of christ lives and does the works of Christ. If you really want to find fault with the 'RADICAL CHRISTIANS' read the bible and see if there is anyhting wrong in what they do according to the word of God.Also please do compare vour church with the word of God. CHRISTIANY WILL THRIVE THROUGH PERSECUTION!!!we will never retaliate or fight back, because our God will avange the weapons formed against us in His time. And besides all this the pastor or the church had nothing to do with the NATURAL DEATHS of the two women!

Posted By: A former catholic now a RADICAL for Christ!
I fear the worst for all you people who are going against the children of the living God!! God's wrath is much MUCH greater than the wrath of all mankind (in all of time) combined!!! Jesus Christ is sooooo real people!!! you know it! And that's why your doing this... our minds can't imagine even the surface of what's in store for those going against God's precious!!!! trust me, you have no idea!!!!

I thought buddhist-monks teach self-control and showing love to one another? ... Where is thier so called 'karunawa' and 'mythriya'? ... How come the security forces are keeping their hands crossed and waiting? ... Aren't they supposed to be looking after the peoples' well-being?

O God.What is This? This is Buddhism? This say Buddha? O O O Sad indeed that followers of Buddha who preached Ahimsa are perpetraters of such barbaric acts.really ashamed of what these monks are doing. They are practicing just the opposite of what Buddha preached. If the monks are behaving like this they should give up their robes with immediate effect.Look also Buddhist monks should not indulge in Politics and get involved in petty things. Also Police and puplic look what they doing? These Buddhists monks have no right to take the law into their hands. This is a shame on a great philosophy of Buddha preached and his way of life

It was once said, "If we put out an eye for each eye that one puts out, and remove a tooth for every tooth one puts out, we will all be eyeless and toothless." Just as Buddists might disagree and not act within the stated precepts of Buddha, so it is with Christians, not all represent the precepts of thier Master. Shall we destroy Buddhism for those who fall short of Buddha? Shall we destroy Christians for those who fall short of Christ?

Religion certainly show it's hateful side here. Sri Lanka will be be destroyed not by foreign influences, but by Buddhist Fundamentalists. Simillarly the USA has the Creationist Christian Fundamntalists, some of whom would not stop at murder to achieve their objectives Remember the threat of last resort, "you are being tempted by the devil". When an ideology attempts to suppress free thought and control the mind of it's followers it becomes a religion of hate. In Sri Lanka superstition overtakes logical and rational thinking. It is a society rife with irrational superstition. In the Middle East it has been Islam; In Russia it has been Communism. The commandment "Thou shall not kill", appears to be very selective, and comes with escape clauses.

I'm a Sri Lankan living in the UK. When I hear or see the kind of atrocity committed at the behest of Buddhist theros, I can only say that that is typical of them! The history of Sri Lanka is replete with incidents where the theros were the main instigators of violence, though the perpetrators were either those in power with vested interests or the ordinary unthinking people. However, the Buddhist theros leading violent & murderous mobs is a phenomenon we've come to see since July 1983. It is time that the considerable number of Buddhists who have spoken out with good reason and sense in the wake of this cowardly and shameful act of violence, took the initiative to free the ordinary Buddhists people from the clutches of their manipulative so-called religious leaders. This is an appeal to you, all good, reasonable and sensible Buddhists, from a non-Singhalese Christian who has been outspoken in the UK to clear your name of atrocities falsely & wrongly attributed to you in connection with the July'83 pogroms. Please move and move swiftly to protect the Christian community as well as other communities in Sri Lanka. You cannot send a better message to the wider world than that particularly at a time such as this

Dear "Buddhist Monks": Are you sure you are Buddhists? or Thugs? The entire world has now seen your so-called "venerable behaviour." You shame Lord Buddha, with this kind of 'third class' behaviour! This is the reason why Sri Lankans turn to other Religions!

 Posted By: Sidath Mapitigama
Same on the Buddhist priest. They preach non violance but practice violance. Whay not leave everything to the courst to decide. Buddha would not have done this

Hundreds of healings and miracles, which took place at these healing-services, went unrecorded! ... Be that as it may, violence is not the Buddhist way. In fact the actions of the J.H.U. are quite contrary, and shameful! Can someone really be 'forcefully converted'? Well, if a person's life is threatened, I guess so, but it wouldn't be a conversion of the heart. Isn't that what matters? ... If someone is willing to give-up his religion for some material benefit, that means he was not a true follower of the religion, anyway! A person has the right to choose their religion. If I want to convert to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism or Buddhism, it's my choice!

It is disheartening to see and hear what some of the buddhist-monks, do and say! Is this what they should promote? We pray for them and ask God's forgiveness for them, since they may not be knowing, what they are doing.

Jesus said, "If your brother hits you on your right-cheek, show him the left-cheek also." All his teaching is about Love, and nothing but LOVE! I think this LOVE (Love your neigbhor as you love yourself)is totally missing - and this missing love is causing all the havoc. This is the time we Sri Lankans require patience; rather, should exercise patience. And not to forget one thing: "What you reap is all that you have sown in your-life, only!"

Most of us want peace and harmony in S.L. If a pentecostal church's pastor is responsible for this incident, we, as Christians, should request him to explain exactly what happened ... the death of two women is serious and should be dealt with according to the law of the land. (If there is any?) Dear Buddist-monks, please protest, but do not act voilently!

Why is everyone surprised that Buddhist monks lead this rampage? It has historically been so in Sri Lanka ever since independence from the British. Buddhist monks have been the instigators of all intolerance against other religions and ethnicities. It was a buddhist monk that killed SWRD Bandaranayake when he was prime minister; they lead the mobs who killed thousands of innocent Tamils in 1983; they have instigated and lead numerous other violent attacks against other religious groups and enthnic minorities in Sri Lanka. This is the first time that they have been caught on tape for the world to see, what they have been doing for years. Not all Buddhist monks are of this caliber. Unfortunately those monks who tread the true path of the Buddha appear either outnumbered or powerless against the militant so called Buddhist monks who control Sri Lankan politics in their death grips.

Sad to see what’s happening in this country. The war between the Tamil and Sinhalese have just ended, are these Buddhist monks trying to create a religious war now!!!Buddhist monks are suppose to be an example to there followers instead they are making fools out of them selves and driving people away from their religion, and they ask why the Buddhist are converting , is this a surprise after seeing the way they are behaving, this is just disgraceful for the whole of sl. after what SL has been through with the recently ended war and the current political situation and crimes and violence between common people we need as much good religion as we can get to keep people stable and out of such things, thus no one religion has the right to put another religion down. Our people especially some of the monks need to learn to respect if they want respect. Last but not least "shame on you Swarnawahini", thought you are a channel committed to give our citizens the truth and both sides of a situation instead you are just making news ,you have proved yourself to be biased and this will greatly effect the future of your channel. God bless Sri Lanka!!!
