Sri Lanka at 16 in Global Gender Gap Index 2009

Sri Lanka has been ranked at 16 in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2009 ahead of France and the USA. Iceland has claimed the top spot from Norway which slipped to third position behind Finland.

The report’s Index assesses countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations, regardless of the overall levels of these resources and opportunities.

"Countries that do not fully capitalize on one-half of their human resources run the risk of undermining their competitive potential. We hope to highlight the economic incentive behind empowering women, in addition to promoting equality as a basic human right," said co-author Saadia Zahidi, Head of the Forum’s Women Leaders and Gender Parity Programme.

This is a flawed report. In countries such as Sri Lanka the percentage of women who work outside of the home is limited. Where as in most developed countries more women are in the work force, also in developing countries there are hardly any stats kept on most things, whereas in the developed world everything is a codified and entered into some data base. If they are to do a report then they have to go by percentages. This report is completely flawed.

Any chance this may somhow reflect the fact that a significant share of the total labour force, especially that brings in foreign currency, is accounted for by maids in the MiddleEast and garment factory wokers within the country?

Even though we are almost equal with UK, this is a drop of 4 places from last year.

Isn't that great? Equal Opportunities record looks very good.

But according to learned and influential U.S sources, we also us rape as "an instrument of war". Never mind that (for better or for worse) we have had two women Prime Minister, one being the first in the world and a President!!

Thats great to hear! Keep it up Sri Lanka! We are a great nation always!

That is good , but what this report fails to tell is that we were no.13 in 2006, so we've actually slipped from where we were. Some things just don't get calculated like domestic violence against women, which is very high in Sri Lanka and happens behind closed doors.

Finally we beat the developed nations .....would not have been possible if not for the involvement of Sri Lankan women!

I don't think we should really care about the position of gender equality we must however celebrate the Sri Lankan WOMAN,the courage, the strength, the inspiration, the deligence, is second to non in this world, she is an example of who this country is all about, they travel to alien countries for their famillies, they leave the villages for factories to toil to be bread winners and it goes on and on, So I think we should all salute our Sri Lankan Woman not because of her achievement in the world stage but simply for her courage to be strong without complaining but doing what need to be done!

We have women candidates also for local elections.

Hey, ladies, no more complains now :). BTW I still hear some ppl saying there should B a separate quota for women in politics. What the hell if women don't wanna get in2 politics y force them?

What a stupid report....! Say you have 2 talented men at work. Replace one with a woman. whalla we have empowered women ...! Instability of a society equally proportional to “Number of women at work”

Now this will be a great statistical report for the self loathing politicians to credit themselves on how their hard work on creating equal opportunities to both sexes has paid off. But if you examine the list closer, you'll see the Philippines are are also ranked high. This can only means on thing, unlike some of the top ranked countries such as those from Scandinavia, where women do actually experience equal rights at work place, our women are being exploited as cheap labor, either in SL or abroad as plantation workers, factory workers or domestic laborers. But hey, it's the numbers that matter!! All hail great Lanka!!!
