Lanka accuses international community of double standards

By Dianne Silva

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagam today said that the international community had double standards with regard to the implementation of human rights. The Minister’s statements were ratified by the visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey V.Lavrov during discussions between the two. “It was recognized that all countries are not equally placed in the field of human rights. Because the dictates of some countries get overriding positions, to the point of creating double standards,” the Foreign Minister said.

A True friend of Sri Lanka. Friend in need is friend indeed. - Thank you Russia

Internal politics and hidden agendas of people in our country coupled with the Soda bottle mentality will definitely dilute the Core Message that we should send to the world and will allow the vested interest to again have a strangle hold on our nation.

As a small dependent country we should have good relations with all the countries of the world, especially the "first world"countries as they buy our manufactured products & also our exports of Tea, Rubber, Spices etc. Its best not to antagonize any country, that way we would have the goodwill of all countries. Also, in time of need they give us Aid and preferential treatment(lower tariffs) for our exports. Be friendly with all countries.

I think this is a historic chapter. It send a clear signal to the west not mess with Sri Lanka. Any resolution against Sri Lanka will be vetoed at the UN . Russia is a super power and with some of the richest people on earth. Sri Lankan FM speech is bold and unafraidful and I think it is one of the best speeches he has given. There are shortcomings at the Foregin Ministry in Sri Lanka but this is the best.

As usual Faqi makes the most sensible comments. It is wise to be friendly with all the countries, especially the developed ones as we might seek their help one day. To those arrogant enough to say we don't need them, I know your pride is at stake, but please take a leaf out of India and see how they conduct their affairs without antagonising other countries.

I do not know why MR appointed you as Foreign Minister. Keep your mouth shut and do something positive for the country. You have done nothing as Foreing Minister other than taking your family on joy rides.

Well said Minister!

Similar to the double standards the GOSL is having towards the tamils who are also legal citizens of this country and treated historically like aliens.

Well known fact; the importance is Russia officially accepts. Will have great ramifications to our benefit.

Well said Jayantha Jayaweera. Rohitha the whole world knows that you are a good for nothing person. You will realise it very soon, if you have not up to now.

I think the FMs statement is good and true. Well said.

Isn't it surprising that Russia is supporting SL. They were hell bent to get a resolution on Gaza in UN but blocked one against SL. More than anything, Minister is admitting to HR violations by making a statement like this.

Russian minister might have given any promises to support Srilanka, if there is no more GSP+ from western. India already promised. China seems to be. If we add all 3, we are getting more than GSP+. But, who will buy the garments and who will run the factories?

It's time for Sri Lanka to take the lead in forming an 'Asian Union'. This way, we can let go of the UN who have been carrying out sadistic agenda of Western imperialists. SL/India/China could invite all Asian neighbors join this union that actually could address Asian concerns that would matter to us most in a meaningful way. By any means this should not be a confrontational move, but only to help us to uplift our countries from eternal economic/defense bondage from the West.

A usual complaint from ineffective countries such as SL, we are stupid to here this for years. Our politicians had easy ride for years, it is time to pot them under spotlight and demand them justify their space. This country need to proper vision for development, to resolve social injustice, to create not politically corrupted justice systems, ect. It time for everyone citizen to take their own stock of the today state and ask questions and act for the better.

A FOREIGN MINISTER WITHOUT THE ABC of Foreign Affairs. BIRDS OF THE SAME FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. HOW CAN THE RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER support Boggles, FORGETTING their occupation of CHECHENIYA and AFGHANISTAN, when they violated HR without any regards to condemnation

I agree with the FM in this regard. However, MR should have attended the U.N General Assembly and put across our case that there was no human rights violations during the final phase of the war - in front of all the world leaders. It was an ideal opportunity. Rohitha is trying his best to score some brownie points with MR
