European Parliament to adopt resolution on Sri Lanka

By Easwaran Rutnam

The European Parliament (EP) is to hold an urgent debate on the situation in Sri Lanka tomorrow and later adopt a resolution on the issue, an official at the External Policies department of the European Parliament told Daily Mirror yesterday.

The official Philippe Kamaris, said the EP Plenary would discuss the Sri Lankan situation tomorrow afternoon after holding a similar debate on Iran and Guinea as part of a series of debates on the violation of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

The decision to examine the situation in Sri Lanka was taken last week by the EP's political groups, under Rule 122 of its rules of procedure.

When contacted, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Brussels said Sri Lanka’s EU Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha would also attend the session at the European Parliament.

Does anybody who has commented here know how much funds the EU grants to Sri Lanka for humanitarian and development work? Do they also know that it is the Sri Lankans who lobby for donor funds, and not that EU, or any other donor for that matter, comes begging to SL to donate their funds? And finally, do they know how many thousands of Sri Lankan people are re-building their lives with these donor funds?

Vipula - you are typical of the idiots found in the this country. GSP was awarded to GOSL three years ago because they applied to the EU parliament for it. In this application, GOSL has signed and agreed to maintain good governance and respect humanitarian principles as outlined by the UN Charter in return for GSP++ status. Now my question to you is, when somebody employs you in an establishment, do you agree to certain terms with the employer such as work time, description of work, work discipline and in return get a salary, perks etc... and if you fail to maintain these terms, what will your employer do? He is sure to give you a kick and send you home, isn't it? I hope you can pass this on to the other idiots like you who are now becoming a majority in Sri Lanka in understanding why such issues take place and the reason we talk gibbberish about it.

The case of NATO/US finding it diffucult to destroy the Taliban/AL Qaeda is because they speak the same language, unlike in SL where majority Tamils do not speak. Further you could easily distinguish this race between the Sinhalese/Muslims/Malays etc. Therefore making your target much more easier to deal with than the Taliban/Qaeda. No doubt you will see the majority Tamils are being harassed as the current Govt. see every Tamil as a terrorist. Dear learned gentleman here, if the Govt of SL has signed whatever agreement that we have entered into with these respective institutions, then it time we abide by the rules and regulations setforth rather than making a big hue and cry over it.

It would be nice if people tried understanding the news before typing out their knee-jerk, xenophobic comments. The EU is not passing a resolution on what GOSL should or should not do. SL is a sovereign country and the EU has no jurisdiction over it. The EU is passing a resolution on how EUROPEAN countries should associate/trade with SL. That is something perfectly within their rights to do (under the power delegated to the EU Parliament by member states).

Gamamge and Vipula, Remember we too are against any country or an organaization imposing something on us.But note that we depend on US and EU so much for annual aids to run our day to day affair , they think twice before they support us. Right now we have a society that no one can write anything against corruptions done by pro government parties. If they do their houses are burnt and white vans will follw them. Yoy all dont feel it bacause it hasnt happend to you. Just put you in their place and imaging how will it be if it happens to you.So dont simply balme if someone wants human writes honoured in a country. It must be done at any cost.If this one sided reporting and corruptions are going to continue , you and me and our childern wont have a country to live. So dont look at things through a coloured glasses. Look neutrally and think intelligently.

Why are they so worried about Sri Lanka? They still can't stomach that we did it without their help and not heeding their dictates. We are an independent country. Some sane person there should tell them. Hema

Its not the EU Nations that are vindictive. Its the Head Nation of the EU - Sweden along with France & UK who are vindictive. Everyone expected this bully boys to prevail. Denying GPS+ is not the end of the World but a little hardships. Sri Lankans will have to buckledown and face if we have to. But, something good will come out of it at the end of the day.

Guys you have to understand the fact that the defeat of LTTE happened with the help of the WEST, India, Pakistan and China. The victory would have been impossible without the support of them. So we better stop boasting ourselves. First the Europe, America and Canada banned LTTE which was the greater cause for the defeat of LTTE. Western countries believed that after defeat of LTTE, there would be a peaceful solution for tamils and there would be improvement in laws of the country and human rights. But nothing happened and western countries are frustrated on this matter. So thier course of actions would be i believe, 1) removal of GSP plus 2)Sanctions by the EU on sri Lanka 3)Sanctions by UN and last a military solution (they have huge amount of unutilised weapons and ammunition!!!!)

No matter what we do EU and the so-called IC will not stop until we agree to their demands. This is the time for us to stand together and say in one voice unequivocally "WE SHALL NOT SURRENDER".

Hema - You people have got it wrong. You attribute any sanctions to the defeat of the LTTE. The US, EU and other western countries do not give "two hoots" about the defeat of the LTTE. They want to see that human rights are respected, especially towards the civilian non-combatants who are detained and referred to as IDP's. It matters least to these countries whether the LTTE was defeated or not, they do not depend on anything from Sri Lanka. We are the ones who depend on them for our manufactured exports and above all the massive amounts of Aid that we receive. So get off this notion " we won the war and all countries a jealous of us" which is very foolish.

Some bloggers here are calling others as idiots because they do not support the people that they think should be in power and for protesting against the actions taken by the EU.EU is actually passing these resolutions to help the UNP in the long term by weakning the Govt and to cater to their tamil diaspora votes. The same paragons of virtue (EU) did not care about human rights when it came to voting against Isreal for the recent Gaza attacks,THEY VOTED NOT TO PUNISH THEM.So this is just a selected witch hunting scenario. Well loosing the GSP+ is going to hurt us,but in the long term the country will gain much more from other avenues because there is no more war.Up to now no local or foreign investors were able to invest and nurture any business any where because of terrorism. Now that curse is history.Even with terrorism did we really go under?Answer is no. Well if we can't get loans from the west surely Sri Lanka will have to start looking for other avenues.Difficult but not impossible. It's going to be difficult for a while but eventually as a country Sri Lanka will start looking for new markets and lenders like Russia and China and will succeed and manage. No we are not going to have a major calamity and people will not rise against the govt and UNP will not come to power for a very very long time. That's the bottom line. All these guys harping about freedom of thought, speech, democracy, writing and white vans never uttered a word or protested when the UNP GOVERNMENTS unleashed terror, thuggery, voter intimidation, executions and tyre pyres in the past and are strangely mum about the unprecedented corruption carried out under those governments especially between the 2002-2004 era.Does anybody honestly think that a future UNP Govt is going to be corruption free? By looking at the past records and the same people still hanging around the party THE ANSWER IS A DEFINITE NO. These bloggers simply don't want to restore democracy in the country, all they want is to have a UNP govt so they can use their social and family connections to better themselves. At the moment there social connections means nothing and useless because it's the wrong party in power. These people do not actually care about the country or people, it's just that they want their type of westernised guys to be in charge so they can use their contacts and connections to prosper. Ultimately this grand talk about how we should think about us and our children living in a clean democracy is cheap political propaganda to promote Ranil and his henchmen. They are sore about their unimportance and inability at the moment. Not at all concerned about the country or people but very upset about the fact that they are marginalised. Hence we see these so called great democrats trying to discipline others by calling them as idiots.

Whether it is Sri Lankan Government or EU what they all do is have a ride on world’s poor innocent civilian population regardless where they are based London, Paris, Jaffna or Colombo. Stopping GSP Plus to Sri Lanka will not affect EU (UK) politicians who claim all their personal expenses from government and do not buy cheap cloths made in Sri Lanka at their super markets or Sri Lankan politicians who are not far behind EU politicians in wealth. It is only poor consumers will suffer at both ends.

EU JUNKIES AND THEIR BEDFELLOWS ARE STILL WELCOME TO SL TO LEARN HOW TO FIGHT AND WIN AGAINST TERRORISM ON A SHOE STRING BUDGET! WE ARE AWARE THAT EU'S NO 1 EXPORT IS WEAPONS, NO. 2 IS PHARMACEUTICALS? WHAT MORALS DO THEY HAVE TO LECTURE ANYONE? LTTE IS DEAD AT A MUCH CHEAPER PRICE THAN ORIGINALLY EXPECTED - INFACT THEY NEVER EXPECTED IT TO HAPPEN ! THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR US.......STUFF GSP, WE WILL MANAGE !

Sri Lankan nation will not fall down because of the loss of GSP+. These European guys are thinking that MR government will fall and a puppet gov will be easily established, but my best guess that they will have to wait a looooooong time untill sun rise and again fall down fron west. Sri Lankan public is inteligent enough to understand their lowly motives.

EU seriously has nothing to do at all! Just meddling in the affairs of other countries! Please respect our sovereignity. EU does not run Sri Lanka as it is the GOSL! I know very well that EU cannot comprehend the fact that Sri Lanka defeated a terrorist organization on her own when the EU cannot do it with all the help in Afghanistan!

We have our own parliament to adopt any resolution that may required affairs of Sri Lanka. What right EU parliament has over SriLanka? Can we too passs resolutions on affairs of UK, France or Norway. Are they joking or out of their mind? Can I decide how my next door man behave with his wife, children and conduct his family. what nonsence this is? Or can we dessoulve our parliament and entrust matters to EU parliament? In same token, can we participate elelction of EU parliament members? I think that EU gone mad! They do not know who they are and what they are?

WHAT IS THE HURRY ? LET ASHES SETTLE DOWN AFTER 30 YEARS OF MAYHEM CREATED BY THE LTTE. SRI LANKA WILL EMERGE AS A COUNTRY PRACTISING TRUE DEMOCRACY UNDER CONDUCIVE ATMOSPHERE. PLEASE DON'T INTERFERE TILL THEN.

Why are these EU nations harassing us? Do we see mass scale violations of HR in our country. Look at the US. They have daily reports of killing, raping, abductions, in every state. We just recovered from a deadly terrorist organisation funded by European domiciled Tamils. EU should encourage greater trade ties with SL if they want peace in this part of the world. They should stop believing lies
