If the question is posed as to who was the best among the Indian High Commissioners who served in Sri Lanka (SL) ? -the answer is Alok Prasad , the former High Commissioner who was to leave for India some time ago before his term of office was over. More than any other Indian High Commissioners who were in SL, Alok Prasad was extolled by this country’s State media and pro Govt. media . India sought to make use of Prasad’s cordial relationship with the SL Govt.. This was best illustrated when the economic CEPA agreement between India and SL was to be signed. India desired to have the agreement signed taking advantage of the close relationship Alok Prasad had with the SL Govt.
Prasad continued nurturing the cordial relations between India’s and SL’s. A classic case in point was , when the Tamil Nadu delegation of MPs was to arrive in SL recently, Alok Prasad was to leave SL before their arrival . But, the SL Govt. possibly decided that Prasad must be here when the delegation arrives so that he can lead the delegation and explain the adverse repercussions the Govt. expected to face in the wake of the visit of the Indian delegation. Prasad stayed back until the Indian delegation’s tour of SL was over , and it was believed that the SL Govt. gave permission for Indian delegation’s visit because of him.
It’s not clear if India, India’s Congress party or Karunanidhi’s party gained anything from this Tamil Nadu delegation. However it is very likely that the SL Govt. did benefit. Though the Tamilnadu Tamils, SL Tamils and the Tamil Diaspora were not well pleased with the Indian Congress Govt., they repose confidence in Karunanidhi. Perhaps, it was Congress Govt.’s objective to boost Karunanidhi’s image, and thereby exploit it to its political advantage at the next Tamil Nadu State elections through this Tamil Nadu delegation. India possibly nursed the idea, via this tour to paint the picture that the saviours of the SL Tamils are Karunanidhi and the Congress party, with a view to sidelining the pro Tiger parties in Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi sent his daughter Kanamoli on this account. Karunanidhi’s daughter, Kanamoli who takes a tough stand in regard to the SL Tamils’ problems , and who is next in line for the Tamil Nadu leadership was included in the delegation , perhaps because both Karunanidhi and the Congress are grooming her as the next ‘crown princess’.
However, the final outcome of the visit of the Indian delegation was Kanamoli becoming impressed with the work of the Sri Lankan government. The SL Govt. projected to the International community through Kanamoli and the delegation of MPs that there was nothing untoward in the SL internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and everything was well. The delegation was later seen, facing criticisms from the local Tamil media , Tamil Nadu and India’s other media groups.
Some sections of the Indian media with dismay expressed, that it was unbelievable that the Karunanidhi party which insisted on the Indian Central Govt. to have no dealings with the SL Govt. had later changed its stand after meeting President Rajapaksa and exchanging pleasantries.
Regarding the Tamil Nadu team, Tamil Nadu politician and actor Vijayakanth SL tour Vijayakanth alleged: “If the Tamil Nadu MPs team has gone to SL on a fact finding mission, it implies that it is because the Indian High Commissioner in SL has been concealing the facts, and misreporting to India.” His criticism is something that may not be downplayed or underestimated. It’s to be seen whether he was reporting the facts truly or he was distorting them.
His responsibility when he was the Indian High Commissioner in SL was to completely eradicate the Tamil Tigers from the North and East. India’s aim was also to destroy the Tamil Tigers. But some analysts believe that after the annihilation of the Tamil Tiger , India has a grouse. It is charging SL that after the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, China which is its arch enemy has started spreading its hegemony aims in the North and East of SL.
Today some sections of the SL Tamil population suspects India. Some sections of the Sinhala population, too have viewed India with suspicion. The appointment of Pillayan as Chief Minister of the Eastern province owing reportedly to similar pressure has rendered some sections of the Muslim community also to turn suspicious towards India. These elements of the Muslim community was expecting a Muslim to be appointed as the Chief Minister for the Eastern pqovince.
