Websites which distort facts to be blacklisted- Government

Irresponsible web sites which resort to distorting facts to create a rift between the government and 'other' parties would be black listed and publicized through the provisions available through the state media, the government information department said today quoting a Minister.

If there is "no rift" as per the spokesman for the Sri Lanka Army, why worry sir?

When alcohol was banned in America, 'moonshine'or illicit liquor manufacturing thrived. At the rate facts are distorted by certain media in this country, all state Media will qualify easily for this category.

For liers its very hard to digest facts

Mr Minister , why bother if the facts are distorted simply explain the truth and take legal action. Why use special provisions , powers to suppress the media. Or is it that facts are correct and harmful for the political survival.

People are inteligent enough to sort out these web sites etc., Name corrupt Officails, Coruppt peoples representatives, Elected and Nominated, and all those ruining our country by coruppt deals and try to rebuild the country. I have a request to all media to publish the names when reporting any news. Even the name of the minister who told this also withheld.

It would be interesting to know who this "Minister" is ! In this information age, how could they "blacklist" websites : there are so many ways of accessing websites through proxies. Let them publicize through state media which has already got a very low credibility. Definite signs of Sri Lanka becoming a Banana Republic.

So the Government of Sri Lanka wants to close all avenues of criticism so that corruption and sm can continue. Anything can come under the term 'distortion of facts'. Even constructive critism could be stifled by this effort.

Ha ha ha MR & Co. has started to panic. This is a good sign will wait & see

Another one bites the dust. These web sites will be branded as traitors. We are going to be a society which hears no evil speaks no evil and see no evil.Next they will say that all emails too will be filtered.where the hell is this sensorship going to end

So does this means that any website which works as the mouthpiece of the government will be termed as a 'responsible' website. Any other view would be 'irresponsible'?

We have now almost now lost the GSP plus and now this news about black listing websites will be an ideal situation for EU to loose confidence about the media freedom. Any person should have the right to express their views and the reader is the best judge to decide. Controlling information will be a stupid idea in these modern days.

one could only sigh and watch in dismay as this country rapidly degenerates to utter chaos and madness. placed 162 in recent press freedom rankings - a drop of nearly 100 places from 6-7 years ago. where is the right to freedom of speech and opinion? I doubt if there are more than a few 'rights' remaining for the present 'rule' to sabotage from us people.

Who said we have democracy. Ha ha ha ..........this is only the beginning many more to come. Sri lankans wake-up.

well said.. Dr. Kaluarachchi., you are spot-on, we did not have any electronic media on those Rajathumas regimes & lets implement that rule.

Good move ..very good move..

Go ahead GOSL! Your people selected you to get such policies in the country. Only God can help the SL people in the future. No Media freedom anymore in SL.

 Posted By: selva
GOSL , you cannot reach outside the boundary of your tin pot state to ban anything outside.....You have no jurisdiction or credibility internationally.

Nuts! Let any one say what they want. If the the Gov. does the right thing and tell the truth no one will believe the nay sayers. Lighten up, let there be different voices. War is over, now its time to listen to those with different views, SL will be a better country.

We killed Lasantha in a broad daylight. We bombed MTV for their quality and unbias news. We put Tissa behind the bar for his quality journalism. Now we start our criminal activity even in cyberspace. We call our self as a responsible government whereas all other countries is looking at us a criminal state.think..

Very good move by the mad dogs. Looks like we are following the footsteps like China, Iran and Libiya. This war victory has not made us humble, but an arrogant nation. Why not give peace a chance.

If the government is going black list some websites it can be an advertisement for those sites so it is natural to expect people to look into that site since they don't get what they deserve. I guess people may start to think as if though the government is running the LTTE's philosophy when it comes to meadia. I let the readers to make their own judgment.

It is a fact that this govt won the war and we have to tolerate the wave of corruption lead by them, But the new trend of culture police that tell us how to live is a real threat to our civil liberties. this trend is lead by the sangha mafia, govt and the hela urumaya, As a buddhhist, I dispise any form of extremism. We are a multi ethnic country and everyone has a right to live here as long as they tolerate each other. Impossing this extremism on minorities will lead again to ethnic rift. I am an adult and I have a right to choose what is right and wrong in a democratic country and I do not want any one to impose their beliefs on me. This form of censorship should be condemned at all levels. No wander EU wants to take away GSP+, When leaders behave in undemocratic manner.

Very good. Let's ban all technology. Even this site is unnecessary. Why have all these untrue views when we can get the truth from the government printing presses? we actually dont need media. only His Excellency's speeches.

Who wants to listen to state media? only a set of helpless, naive, bunch of people who worship an rickety TV set which can catch only rupavahini & ITN will. If you see whats being aired on these channels during prime time, it makes you wonder how pathetic people in this country are, if they are watching it.

What about all the false propaganda - distorted facts - dished out on state-run televison and newspapers. Hypocracy at its worst.

 Posted By: Flavius Marcianus
At last... I am seeing a unity in the forum to object the move by the media minister. Lets keep the presure on...we do not want our country to run by dictators.

 Posted By: Chamini
Pathetic move this. Let the media be free. The people will read both sides and decide what their stance is.

 Posted By: David
Once again this shows that there is no freedom of expression in Sri Lanka. Shame on the govt.

 Posted By: perera
Good suggestion man. Do it. Ban all the newspapers ,private television stations and web sites. Leave only Lake House Newspapers, Rupavahini , ITN and the Web Site of Ministry of Information. This will show that SriLanka is the most prosperous and self sufficient country. No courruptions , no injustice and no unfail political influences. All are happy and we are second to none. "Jaya Wewa ! ! ! ! !

It'llbe very interesting to see how the government define's "distorting". This is a very immature move by the government. Silly as it may sound, this reminds me how small children cry, when they are bugged and hit the people who bug them to make them stop bugging them, haha.. it shows the mentality of the people who run this country. I'm not fully blaming these people, after all we elected them, hehe

So gosl getting cold feet eh??? Firstly ban the state media for distorting almost all the facts.. what a wonderful way of democracy... WE WILL SOON BE RULED LIKE CHINA I GUESS
