By Channaka de SilvaTilan Samaraweera is certain to play his first One Day International for four years while Upul Tharanga is also likely to make a comeback into the Sri Lanka squad for the ODI series against Pakistan starting on July 30 at Dambulla, sources said.
Samaraweera has caught the eye of the selectors after improving his Test strike rate tremendously in the past few months, while left hander Tharanga may replace injured Tillekeratne Dilshan for the first three ODIs.
Another promising left handed opener Mahela Udawatte who turned 23 just four days ago is also in the radar of the selectors to partner veteran Sanath Jayasuriya at the top of Sri Lanka batting order.
Selectors are likely to overlook middle order batsmen Chamara Silva and Jehan Mubarak who were failures at the recent Twenty20 World Cup, while Chamara Kapugedara and Sri Lanka A Team captain Tilina Kandamby who had a magnificent series against India in February are likely to complete the middle order.
Lasith Malinga who was not considered for the Tests due to fitness concerns is also a certainty in the team while gifted all rounder Angelo Mathews will also make his ODI debut.
If Sri Lanka decides to name only 14 in the squad for the first three ODIs in Dambulla, then the contest for the final place will be between youngster Isuru Udana and the recently married Farveez Maharoof, but Udana has the edge according to sources.
Selectors are also likely to consider the names such as experienced pace bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando at the final selection meeting today, but none of them are likely to make the final 15, sources added.
