The Police Special Investigation Unit examining Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s claims that the 2011 World Cup final was fixed has been suspended due to lack of evidence.
“We will not investigate it further,” SSP Jagath Fonseka, head of the SIU told Lankadeepa. They will now submit a report to the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports.
The ruling party politician made the wild charge with apparent conviction regarding the match played in Mumbai between Sri Lanka and India. That too after nine years of silence. And he offered no evidence to back what has now become a global talking point.
“We had a discussion internally and we found that there’s no ground to carry on with investigations after recording statements from three former players,” he explained.
The Special Investigation Unit commenced investigation on the request of the Ministry of Sports following Mahindananda’s allegation.
They recorded statements from Aravinda de Silva who was the chairman of selectors at the time, Upul Tharanga, and Kumar Sangakkara, the captain of the 2011 side. They were also to meet Mahela Jayawardene on Friday morning but the meeting was later cancelled.
