Among the thousands that visited Bogambara Prison after it was opened for public viewing was 70-year-old widow of notorious criminal ‘Maru Sira’ who was hanged at the Bogambara prison in the mid 70’s.
Those who visited Bogambara Prisons today were surprised to see Ranmenika making her way to have a glimpse of the prison cell where her husband was reported to have spent his last days on earth being sent to the gallows which was one of the popular sights among the visitors.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, she is reported to have cried out saying ‘Siripala has left me’, probably reminiscing the days gone by when she saw her husband’s prison cell.
On being shown the gallows she had inquired, “Is this where Siripala was hanged.
Bogambara prisons Senior Superintendent Tissa Jayasinghe allowed Ranmenika who was accompanied by her relatives to roam free inside the Bogambara prison. (Pix and tex by J. A. L. Jayasinghe)
It was not Marusira who was hanged here on this gallows. It was his dead body. He head committed suicide with an overdose of anti depressant tablets that he had collected over a period of time and concealed in a hole on the wall of his cell. He had concealed it with Chunam (lime). He had been telling his prison guards that he will not be hanged by them. He made sure of this promise. A Commission was appointed by the then Govt to report on this. via DM iPad app
