A wild elephant, known as 'Kora Aliya' that has turned a great threat to the safety of residents in several villages of the Ampara district was tranquilized by Wildlife Department officials this morning in order to be transported to Pinnawala.
Veterinary surgeons Dr. Vijitha Perera and Dr. Pramuditha had tranquilized the animal that was running rampant in the villages of Kunduwatuwana, Paragahakale and Inidurawa, incurring great losses to the crops in the areas. The elephant -famously known in the areas as the ‘Kora Aliya’ as a result of a limp on one of its legs, is due to be treated at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.Pix and video by Wasantha Chandrapala

Man has encroached into the doman of the elephants. This is happening all over the world, where there are 'wild elephants'. In Thailand there are hardly any elephants left in the wild any more. This is bound to happen due to the human population explosion in the countries where there are 'wild elephants' There seems to be no remedy for this as the jungle habitat of the elephants grow smaller in size by the year. Eventually they would have to start culling elephants as done in some African countries to keep the elephant population to a manageable size in keeping with the available land (habitat) for their survival.
