The National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) will be holding the NCE Export Awards 2015 to recognize excellence in export operations in the midst of an export friendly regime being elected to office.

“A small country like us cannot survive without exports, and our exports need to improve to match our competitors. We encourage potential exporters to become exporters. The culmination is the awards,” NCE President Sarada de Silva said.

The 23rd edition of awards will be held in September at the Colombo Hilton, and will include a brand new trophy for the main award, to reflect the changes in export trends.

“We sought to change the standards this year. This includes changes to the application, and criteria for the selection for the awards to take in modern trends, and a technical committee was also formed,” de Silva added.

Awards will be presented in the 3 categories of; exporters of products, exporters of business and professional services, and service providers to exporters such as bankers, freight forwarders and raw material providers.

International Foodstuff Co. Agri Bio Tech (Pvt) Ltd Chairman Sarath De Silva said that with the increase of national targets for exports, the exporters should become more active.

“With the government increasing export targets, it’s the duty of exporters to export,” he said.

Export figures have fallen from around 34 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2000 to 13.9 percent of GDP in 2014 due to a lack of government focus.

Bureau Veritas Consumer Product Services Lanka (Pvt) Ltd Director Chanaki de Costa noted that the government should recognize and award the best exporters.

“It’s a responsibility of the government which the NCE has done,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Chamber President said that the trade body is willing to support the government on its economic manifesto which is focused on exports and a knowledge-based social market economy.

“The NCE stands ready to follow the manifesto and will give full support to the government and work with political authorities,” he said.
