ACCA appoints Samarasinghe as President for second year

ACCA’s 38thAnnual General Meeting held recently at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, had Danushka Samarasinghe, the Chief Operating Officer at Softlogic Stockbrokers, being appointed for the second year as the President for ACCA Sri Lanka for the year 2015/2016. Adrian Perera, will continue to hold the position of Vice President.

The rest of the executive committee comprised of Nandika Buddipala,Channa De Silva, KumuduniGunatilake B.H.S. Jayawardena, Cyril Mundy, Jehan Perinpanayagam, Suren Rajakarier, and Supul Wijesinghe.

Addressing the audience, Samarasinghe said that ACCA would persist on the continuous growth of their student numbers, retaining their membership, strengthening partnerships with learning providers and the corporate sector and work on promoting the highest professional, ethical and governance standards.He also said that ACCA would be concentrating on producing “Complete Finance Professionals” through their Continuous Professional Development” Programs.Mahemdrika Wijesooriya, Marketing and Membership Manager of ACCA Sri Lanka, outlined the years achievements. These included harnessing relationships with relevant ministries and building synergies with state universities as well as joining hands with them for career guidance programmes. ACCA Sri Lanka also conducted interactive sessions for schools in different regions where ACCA members shared their experience on how the qualification has supported them to achieve success.

Other activities included having over 200 students and affiliates being awarded prizes for high achievements in their exams.

This was followed by a successful student’s conference and corporate race. A series of toast masters workshops were also carried out by the students’ society during the year.

A media campaign was launched using ACCA members as brand ambassadors to promote the qualification. A range of initiatives aimed at supporting conversion to membership were introduced during the year. To support developing the finance profession in Sri Lanka ACCA also worked closely with other professional bodies on various initiatives.

In addition, ACCA strengthened their relationships with the corporate sector through many successful workshops conducted in collaboration with leading conglomerates. A two day workshop was also organized together with DNV GL, Global Compact on, “Integrated Reporting (IR) framework and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4”. . Another successful venture was the 11th sustainability reporting awards ceremony that had a range of new award categories introduced with many new corporates taking part.

The event concluded with an interesting presentation and discussion by Economist, Anila Dias Bandaranaike who spoke on Sri Lanka’s Current Development Challenges and said the business world should concentrate on the people, planet and profits that include programmes on sustainable development, social justice and human wellbeing.
