National Savings Bank has been making a continuous effort to encourage the saving habit of the people of this country now for more than 45 years, teaching the nation to save.
The bank, while marching forward with this ultimate mission is always committed to extend a helping hand to the children to be successful at examinations and secure a good education in addition to ‘Punchi Hapan’ and ‘Hapan’ Savings Accounts of the bank introduced for the children.
Accordingly, the ‘Hapan Scholarship Awards’ is organized annually as a national event to felicitate the children who have scored best at the examination. This year’s event was held for the twelfth consecutive time on a grand scale with the initiation of the Public Enterprise Development Minister Kabir Hashim and Education and Cultural Affairs Minster Akila Viraj Kariyawasam at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre recently. With a view to presenting scholarships to a larger group of children the bank has taken measures to felicitate students who have scored highest marks in each District and in both Sinhala and Tamil mediums.
The Secretary to the Public Enterprise Development Ministry Raveendra Hewavitharana and the Secretary to the Education Ministry Sunil Hettiarachchi, the National Savings Bank Chairman Aswin de Silva, Directors, Suranga Naullage, Anil Rajakuruna, Attorney-at-Law A.K. Seneviratne, National Savings Bank General Manager/CEO Dhammika Perera and a number of special guests were present at the occasion.
The students who have claimed first, second and third places scoring the highest marks were awarded with cash gifts to the value of Rs.100,000, Rs.75,000 and Rs.50,000 respectively while the children who are among the best 15 students in each District both in Sinhala and Tamil mediums have received a certificate, a medal and a school bag. The students who have scored best marks at the Grade Five Scholarship Examination, have a Hapan or Thapel Hapan Account opened prior to the Examination at National Savings Bank and maintained a minimum balance of Rs.3000 as at 1st October 2017 were eligible for the scholarships.
In the meantime, the bank has made it a point to felicitate a group of differently abled children who have performed well at the Scholarship examination amidst many a hardships, to appreciate their courage and determination, without taking any condition in to account.
In addition, all Hapan Account holders who have passed the Scholarship Examination will be felicitated at branch level with certificates and gifts.
Subsequently, with the view of assisting another group of children to get prepared for the Grade-Five Scholarship Examination yet another successful island wide Hapan Scholarship Seminar series has been conducted at 130 venues.
Hapan Savings Account is the guidance provided by National Savings Bank for the children of the nation to practice the habit of saving from an early age. A Hapan Account can be opened from any branch of the bank, post office or sub post office.
Hapan Account holders receive many attractive benefits along with an interest rate of one percent additional to the rate offered to other savings accounts. Further, a number of measures are in place to improve the efficiency of and to expand the school banking network established with the objective of inculcating the habit of saving among the school community.
