The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to rehabilitate and redevelop 100,000 kilometres of roads as an optional road network connecting highways and other main roads within this year.
Co-Cabinet Spokesman Higher Education, Technology, Innovation, Information and Mass Media, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the roads will be selected based on a scoring system.Roads, which have not undergone any rehabilitation or redevelopment, will be prioritised in the selection process while other factors such as the number of families that utilises a particular road and access to economic, health and education centres will also be considered.
Gunawardena noted that long-term concessional credit facilities from Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) will be obtained to finance the project with a considerably high involvement of Provincial Councils.
