A 24 year-old Civil Defence Force member was found dead after he attempted to set a new Guinness world record at Wan-Ela in the Kantale area yesterday, the police said. The youth had told his family members in the morning to bury him alive in a trench he had dug earlier in the day.

The family members had been instructed to light a fire on top of the mock grave after burying the youth alive and to open it at 4.00 pm. When the family had dug open the mock grave the youth was found unconscious. He was rushed to the Kantale hospital and found dead upon admission, the Police added.

    Katmai Sunday, 04 March 2012 12:17 PM

Oh great! So, you mean, if a Sri Lankan soldier, who still receives a handsome salary, is not going around robbing people, then he is to be respected? Don't you have to do something respectable any more to be respected? Is it the case that not doing something despicable is enough to earn your respect?

I don't know... may be the meaning of "respect" has changed now. Or, may be this says something about the times we're living in.

    ramesh Sunday, 04 March 2012 12:25 PM

At least he was brave enough to take a risk. Do not call it a cheap publicity. There wouldnt have been anyone in outer space if the first one didnt take the risk. Adventure has a thrill which only a person who does it knows it. Simple spectators are dummy pieces.

Hats off for this young chap!!!!!!!!!!

This is the time to think which type of record must add to Guinnes. record. There are lot of law to implement of safety. When it will come to ISO 18000 standerd.

    Azeez Sunday, 04 March 2012 02:54 PM

When most of us were sitting at home like cowards, handsome salary or not, this guy went to war to save the country. You should respect him for that first! Even though what he did was rediculous, he tried to achieve something with his life, rather than being a manthrees thug or a thief, as mentioned above.

Katami, when it comes to a soldier, respect what he did, the handsome salaries can come in any ones way, but the heart to sacrifice one's life for the country and courage will comes only to those who are brave!

    wickramatungaag Sunday, 04 March 2012 08:58 PM

Saman Jinadasa`s comment must be considered seriously. The so called "officers witnessed" the attempted record MUST BE CHARGED FOR MANSLAUGHTER. Where is the low and order in Sri Lanka. Any fool can show off in front of innocent people. What`s the capacity of these officials of GB of Records as it`s a known and well published story that there are no "officials of GB of records in SL. These culprits should handled very seriously at the Court of Law. Where are those rescue teams as done in other countries. The Govt. should not allow the world to look at our country as a country of barbarians.

    Ranjith Sunday, 04 March 2012 09:08 PM

Even though motivation are varied, most of Guinness word recorders and attempters were risked their life, famous Kumar Anandan died in while he was attempting to brake the Guinness word recorder. It is tossing a coin if he wins its become a headline. There is way to attempt to make a record. Don’t forget in order to set a new record there must be a previous record. Otherwise burry in 10 minutes enough to go to the record book. It is not clear whether this solder followed the Guinness protocols or not. It looks to me not. That’s why this attempt looks ridicules. Even if he alive the record won’t be counted .On the other hand if he has followed Guinness protocols the blame should go to the officials not to poor parents. My hat off to this young man and blame goes to Sri Lankan media not to educate general public.

    sena Sunday, 04 March 2012 10:36 PM

he may established a record on this

Sameen Jan Monday, 05 March 2012 02:24 AM

To begin with he was not a soldier.
Soldiers saved SL from the LTTE sacrificing their lives. They did not steal.
Who are you to speak of respect when you run soldiers down hiding yourself.
Were you with the LTTE or the TNA

I agree with Solomon, it is plainly homicide, parents and his friends should be charged for murder. At atleast his freinds should have notified the nearby Police station. a young life is lost in vain. May be he wants to commit suicide, who knows!!

    fazli Sunday, 04 March 2012 05:19 AM

Mistakes do happen. This is an expensive & irreversible one. When you are young you always want to achieve, you want to prove a point. Thats natural & at times you go beyond extreme.

Saman Jinadasa Sunday, 04 March 2012 05:27 AM

Parents and whoever involved should be charged for manslaughter.

    lankashantha Sunday, 04 March 2012 09:45 AM

DM inform to Sri Lanka, Those who want to set any records can do it by themselves. It should be certified by the organization and to be witnessed by it's official.
