In what it seems to be a step towards exercising its full powers given by the Constitution, the Western Provincial Council is gearing up to set up Sri Lanka's first Provincial Council- controlled University,  WPC Chief Government Whip Renuka Perera said.

He said that the proposal to set up this university is to be taken up for approval at the council sessions on February 23. (YP)

To add more to unemployable qualification category!

Good move. There should be clearly defined standards governing this Uni. Hope JVP will not disrupt this good initiative.

Pl do not allow JVP led union to run the University. Vision should be focussed to promote lawbinding students not law breakers or thugs.

I can even 'smell' the strikes, which are on the way.

Good move ... three suggestions: 1. Don't give anything free; 2. Don't let the JVP invade (that means prohibit politics inside); 3. Hire professional lecturers, from outside our traditional universities. If these three conditions are satisfied your new university might become one of the greatest, in the world! Wish you all the courage and strength, to make this a success!
