Woman Lance Corporal found dead

Police have launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a woman Lance Corporal who was found dead in the women’s hostel  the Kotalawala Defence Academy, early this morning.

The deceased, Sachitra Kalpani Maragoda (21) of Bataduwa, Galle, had been following a training course in rowing conducted by the Kotalawala Defence Academy in the vicinity of the Bolgoda Lake for about eight months. It was reported that she had fallen unconscious around 5.15 am and struck her head on the bed, whereupon she had been rushed to the Narahenpita Police Hospital after informing her superiors, however, she was pronounced dead on admission.

Mount Lavinia Acting Magistrate C.A. Dharmatilleka visited the scene and held the preliminary magisterial inquiry. He ordered the police to produce the witnesses in court on May 17. 2013. HQI Mount Lavinia M.W. Chandratilleka and IP Janaka Kumara are conducting further investigations. (M.S. Perera)
