All vessels carrying motor vehicles will be diverted to Hambantota Port for unloading from May 31, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority said. The SLPA added that they have taken this initiative in consultation with shipping lines and motor vehicle importers.

“Vehicle parking yards in the Port have become congested due to the large influx of imports in spite of the SLPA releasing many underutilized areas for vehicle parking” added a statement issued by the SLPA.

Port Authority also says that in addition to the above problems, vehicle importers are failing to clear their vehicles expeditiously from the Port thus causing inconvenience for the efficient functioning of the port.

“Due to the non availability of berthing facilities at the Colombo Port, vessels experience delays of more than ten days and as a result freight rates have been increased by the lines which in turn add to the cost of the selling price of a vehicle in the local market” further added the official statement.

    Anil Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:16 PM

    ajith Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:24 PM

Who will pay the trucking cost from Hambotota to Colombo?

    dava Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:50 PM

Why not ask Hambantota to be an independent state?
It is not the North should be....?

    manjula Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:24 PM

If Airport comes to that area, then sorry. Give more votes next time as well to them in order to their devolopment.

    Toyota Wednesday, 04 April 2012 04:04 AM

Hambantota close to countries in the east , japan, korea, malaysia. etc.

Ships do not have to travel the extra mile to west (Colombo).

(Fuel) Savings to the shipping co. -> less shipment cost -> less duty -> less cost to citizens.

    The Tax Hike is compensated!

Kumana Kurulla Wednesday, 04 April 2012 04:38 AM

I came to know that the EIA (Env. Impact Analysis) for Mattala was done during the off-season of Kumana Bird's season. If somebody knows the truth value of this, please correct me.
If true, can we use this only during off-season?

Nuwaraeliye kamal Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:11 PM

May be no other goods to unload other than vehicles, I am pretty sure.

    lanka Wednesday, 04 April 2012 05:07 AM

reason to tax hike was to manage and use fuel efficiently. as too many vehicles... so by sending all the cars to hambantota and getting back all to colombo isnt it going to cause more fuel and transport and ++ other cots... where is planning and reasoning for all these ... non of these make sense ... if you + and - and see..

    Sam Wednesday, 04 April 2012 06:09 AM

    Nodrog Wednesday, 04 April 2012 10:42 AM

Politician's cars are air-freighted to katunayake at great costs but common man's car is sent to Hambantota.

    Yehiya Wednesday, 04 April 2012 11:12 AM

Colombo port capacity more than 40% not utilise. Very funny administration. Its good to tell show the vessels to Hambantota

    Noor Wednesday, 04 April 2012 12:39 PM

Hi any body can tell me how much a perch land in Hambantota, i am planing to move there, Hambantota going to be future capital of the country.

    Lanka Wednesday, 04 April 2012 03:44 PM

Very good move by the Government. Our country needs distributed development and there should be another good port be built in Jaffna too. Colombo has grown to its maximum level and Colombo is no longer afford any develpment. All the best!

    RM Wednesday, 04 April 2012 04:45 PM

Recall the quote "If you build it they will come", but this is more like "If you build it they will be forced to come". How inefficient to add additional transportation cost to bring them back to the western province where the heavy need for the vehicles? Hopefully this is a temporary measure.

Imran Hussein Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:19 AM

Very true Sandun, 'pissu' at its best. On second thought, are we the 'pissos'?

First they couldn't get anyone to go there voluntarily now they are forcing them to do so. Way to go

    Sandun Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:20 AM

    Den nam hondatama Pissu

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:06 AM

The next would be to force those who leave the country to use only Hambanthota Airport ? When there is no demand for such facilities, the only way is to use force. What a Miracle of Asis!

    CYMA Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:37 AM

    H'tota is a different country?

    Wasantha Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:42 AM

If this is going to Implement I wonder whether the Infrastructure facilities like accomodation to Customs Officials,Wharf clearks ,Bunkering facilities to vessels is in order !!!!!!!
If those things are in order then some consolation.

    kondebendapucheena Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:56 AM

    Ajantha Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:03 AM

    Nodrog Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:13 AM

The beginning of the end of people's rights to do as they choose.

    udu Tuesday, 03 April 2012 09:58 AM

    No port tax

    Fayad Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:13 AM

    Commercial city H'tota ???

    Nodrog Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:36 AM

This port was supposed to be a transhipment / re-fuelling port. Because of its pre-mature opening it still cannot accomodate large ships and smaller ships have to navigate carefully to enter the port. Hence shipping companies are by-passing it. So next solution is to force people to use it to overcome the bungling of the culprits responsible for this fiasco.

    RajasH Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:40 AM

but they have increased the duty on cars. So they are not expecting any imports?

    Minister Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:23 AM

All motor vehicle importers will have to open their showrooms in H'tota, and all those who wish to purchase vehicles can go there.

    Criclover Tuesday, 03 April 2012 10:32 AM

Don't worry. No more vehicle imports due to high tax.

    Shane Tuesday, 03 April 2012 11:53 AM

is this the way to development??

    ajith Tuesday, 03 April 2012 12:42 PM
