The main opposition UNP warned in Parliament today that the strategy adopted by the international community against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council was identical to the one they did for the creation of the world’s newest nation South Sudan last year.

Making his remarks during the debate on the UNHRC resolution, UNP Vice President Lakshman Kiriella said that if the government did not ensure the rights of the minorities, it could lead to the partition of the country.

Mr. Kiriella said the resolution had particularly highlighted the need to investigate into the cases of forced disappearances and to strengthen the democratic institutions. (KB & YP)

Unlike in Sudan, here we have "super patriots" who will even undertake a death "farce" to safeguard the sovereignity of the country.

What about Sinhalese's who voted you to power, rights mr.unp?

    Mooden Tuesday, 03 April 2012 01:44 PM

failure of adaptation and introduce a mechanism to implement the suggestions of the lesson learnt national reconciliation report as past by the UNHRCt will lead to a situation as happened to Sudan. It means north east of Sri Lanka will be separated as a independent state of Tamils.

    ElavaluSambol Wednesday, 04 April 2012 04:21 PM

There are also super traitors like you, Callie.

Ananda lD Tuesday, 03 April 2012 01:51 PM

MR. KIRIELLA, PL. LIST OUT FOR OUR INFORMATION WHAT RIGHTS THE TAMILS DON'T HAVE, AND WHAT MORE RIGHTS THEY WANT. HAVE THEY BEEN DENIED ANY RIGHTS ENJOYED BY OTHER COMMUNITIES. ?

    banda Tuesday, 03 April 2012 02:15 PM

some contries in the world resisted international pressur in regard to human irghts. At the end, those contries faced hardship. Is Sri Lanka going to prove that history repeat itself.

    ramba Tuesday, 03 April 2012 03:07 PM

yes just leave the tamil area , they will live happy now without LTTE, why GOSL bather about tamil area.....

    Saskia Tuesday, 03 April 2012 03:02 PM

Each situation should be seen independently however, they can have some common similarities. But, in case of SL, there is still a small chance that SL will be divided into North SL and Souh SL. This depends on the GOSL policy towards the minorities in SL. In my view, devolution of power to tamils will keep the country as one.

    kiribath Tuesday, 03 April 2012 03:13 PM

did UNP protect the minorities when they are in power ??,

    Ajith Wednesday, 04 April 2012 03:48 AM

Ananda, why dont you read the LLRC recommendation, which clearly lists, what our Government ought to do, to build a relationship with the minorities...

    Rosh Wednesday, 04 April 2012 10:18 AM

If UNP was in power, the division would have realised in 2005.

    Noor Thursday, 05 April 2012 09:58 AM

Mr. Ananda, here some of tips, Remove Sinhala Buddhist only person can be a president of Sri Lanka from constitution, provides jobs to the Tamils in the police and army and other administrative sectors in Sri Lanka as Sinhalese are prevailing (at least to the percentage), remove all unwanted military camps from the north and east to allow the civilian free movements, set up police stations with Tamil police officers in all rank (Note currently most of police station are with Sinhalese only), remove all weapons from all parties who are with government as did to LTTE, don’t arrest any people without a court order just because of he/she is Tamil, allow Tamils in Sri Lanka to move freely and buy properties and live freely ( Still there are places in Sri Lanka no minority person can buy a property), provide powers to provincial council and act as a central government. Etc........ look into LL committee report for more and how rebuilt the Sri Lanka.

    jellybabix Wednesday, 04 April 2012 05:10 AM

It "may be" true. But you cannot compare Sudan and Sri Lanka.
