The Elections Commission today ruled out the possibility of having foreign observers present at the counting centers for the upcoming polls, stating that none of the political parties had made such a request on nomination day.

The main opposition, the UNP sent an official request in writing to Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka today to have foreign monitors present in counting centers to ensure that accurate results are released.

However the Election Commission ruled out such a possibility stating that the UNP should have made this request on the day of the nomination. (YP)

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 04:57 PM

    Some think fishy

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 03:39 PM

Any excuse would do when you want to help the govt. Had it been done on nomination day, he would have said no provision in the Election Law.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 05:00 PM

yeah manuplated results. PA won with two third majority...

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 05:01 PM

Why we want foreign monitors in counting centers. Agents selected by candidates are allowed to observe counting.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 07:36 PM

Independent job, paid for by the taxpayers of Sri Lanka.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 07:38 PM

Our financial situation may not be sound enough to pay the airfare for bringing-in anyone, to monitor vote counting.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 08:20 PM

Has he been 'ordered' to do this? HA .. HA .. HA ..

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 08:50 PM

What the Elections Commissioner has done is right!

    Thursday, 18 March 2010 06:27 AM

Do our local agents know to count ?
Only the foreigner know. Hi !!

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:17 AM

Letter of the Law by Dayananda! What a great man? He has used his powers very well. Ha! Ha!

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 02:26 PM

That is the place we want to observe,if you cannot fullfill that requirement .we cannot accept the counted ammount.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 02:23 PM

If the commissioner is really concerned about fairness and accuracy being demonstrated to all candidates, he should allow this request.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 02:18 PM

so now we will know the correct results...EC is preparing for a free and very fair elections!!!

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 02:12 PM

Looks like the election commissioner does not want any more tensions

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:57 PM

They didn't know that he takes orders only from GOSL.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:38 PM

This is a good example to see how Mahinda fixed general election results. He fixed it to get more than 25 lakshs majority to his party. UNP and JVP where are your brains?

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:05 PM

Now they would say Poll chief has suddenly crossed over to MR.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 12:44 PM

what do you think u,n,p you are going to pay money for foreign observers no use because people loss confidence of you[U.N.P]

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 12:37 PM

Ah ha, I can smell something!

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 12:30 PM

But why on earth not? please do not make lame excuses....unless there are plans afoot to rig this election as well

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 12:11 PM

Good on you EC.Our country is not ready to dance for any tunes by the foreign forces.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:57 AM

Maybe at the time of the Nomination the UNP thought that it was necessary to have foreign observers at the counting centers. The EC should wake-up from his slumber & see what is going on>

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:56 AM

What is this nonsense??? Is there a law to say that such request should be made on the nomination day? Dear EC, you are a disgrace>

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:24 AM

Despicable Dayananda will come out with lame excuses. This guy will pave all the ways that gave leverage for the government to abuse and manipulate.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:24 AM

Here we go AGAIN ! The damage this man has done to our country will reflect on future generations of his family.
